If you are a struggling parent who has problems with your kids, positive child discipline may be the solution that you have been searching for. What does this term actually mean? Well, to better describe it, leave off the word discipline, and replace it with reinforcement. That would be a better way of putting it because what it really is about, is, replacing the hard line types of child punishment with positive child reinforcement. Did you know that the prevailing belief among modern therapists and child behavior experts, is that discipline does not work? Yes, you read that correctly. Let us take a look at what the dictionary has to say to see exactly what we're talking about. Webster's says the top 3 definitions are: 1.Training to act in accordance with rules. 2.A regimen that develops or improves a skill. 3.Punishment inflicted by way of correction and training. The first two are sort of mild, however, the third definition is more like what we use in regards to our children. The dilemma is, once we begin to use this style of parenting, it will probably be something we use regularly. Doesn't inflicting punishment seem as though it refers to animals? Is it possible to be a parent and not use punishment? Most parents don't think so. Perhaps you are a fairly new parent, and your children are young so they don't really get into too much trouble. If your kids are older and more crafty, they surely get into a lot of trouble. If so, you will need much more tolerance when switching to softer techniques. Something else to keep in mind is that all the hard line tactics of yelling and screaming, realistically, end up not giving you the results you were looking for. It is true that your kids still seek your approval, even as they grow up. However, they may learn some devious tactics to fool you. And when you come down on them, they see you as the police, and they will act as though they are behaving, but when you go away, they are free to do what they want! Also, when we yell and scream at, and berate our children, they actually will become full of fear and stress. This will then cause a rise in cortisol, which is made by the adrenal gland. There is a lot to be said about the tale of cortisol, however, for now, we will just say that there are quite a few very negative effects of consistent exposure to extra cortisol. Parenting is such a tough job that, almost all parents use strict punishments at some point. If you can be included here, then you know about the frustrations of parenthood. The question remains as to how do we keep our children in line, and teach them how to become productive members of society. Well, the answer is simple. And if you're having difficulties with your children, the time to do something is now. The longer you wait, the more difficult the transition will be. And it's not that this can't be done. The only thing that will stop this from working is you. Positive child discipline works if you allow it to! Just remember this, if you give up, you very well may be giving up five minutes before the miracle happens. Picture in your mind, using love and patience to get your children to listen. Imagine them doing what you tell them to, just because they knew it was right. If you are sick of the status quo, and are determined to move forward, then....
