Pediatric Dentistry for Healthy Teeth
It is no secret that the number of children with cavities is gradually increasing. The Center for Disease Control and Prevention has reported that pediatric dentists all over the country are seeing more and more preschoolers, most of whom are suffering from extensive tooth decay. Considering these numbers, parents are getting more worried about the materials being used for dental fillings. Resin fillings have a number of pros when compared to metal fillings, but they contain of chemicals considered as a possible reason for hormonal or behavioral issues.
Tooth decay is one of the most frequently found issues in children. However, it can be prevented with proper dental hygiene. Some parents do not know the importance of properly brushing those baby teeth, and many parents increase the risk of the baby's teeth getting decayed by giving the baby a bottle at bedtime.
The sugar found in foods, milk and drinks forms the most conducive environment for bacteria to prosper, and this bacteria results in tooth cavities. Regular flossing and brushing can help keep the bacteria under control. In addition to this, the risk of tooth decay can be reduced by avoiding sweet drinks and snacks.
In the last few years, a number of pediatric dentists have seen many preschool children who are suffering from multiple cavities. With some of them requiring in excess of a dozen fillings, dentists and parents have begun to question whether the materials utilized to fill the cavities are safe or not.
Metal fillings can be installed faster and they do not cost a lot of money. However, in order to use this filling, more of the original tooth has to be removed. Amalgam filling is generally considered the best option for children over six years old, who do not have a lot of cavities.
Composite, or resin fillings, are manufactured from a blend of a number of different materials and often are costlier than metal fillings. Resin reconstructions will not involve a lot of removal of the original tooth, and will be nearly invisible in the original tooth when the procedure is completed. However, installing these fillings takes longer. Young children, who have a number of cavities, will generally have to be sedated with general anesthesia before the procedure is commenced.
Therefore, if you feel your children's teeth are not as healthy as they should be, schedule a consultation with your nearest Chicago pediatric dentist so that any problems can be detected and corrected at an early stage.
