Percussive Guitar Techniques That Don’t Take Years To Learn

The style of percussive guitar playing can look very difficult to do. As great as it sounds, seeing someone play guitar this way can leave you very envious and full of doubt as to whether you are capable of doing the same with your own guitar playing. Good news is, armed with the basics you too can sound great playing percussive guitar. In this video lesson, I show you how. The tutorial is broken into 3 parts: Part 1: Percussive Techniques In this section you will learn common percussive guitar techniques you can sound across the body of the acoustic. Each technique emulates a specific part of a drum kit including: - Bass/Kick Drumrn- Tomsrn- Snare/Rimshotrn- High Hat Part 2: Percussive Grooves Next, you learn how to combine the percussive techniques learned in part 1 into cool sounding beats and grooves on the body of your acoustic guitar. Part 3: Percussive Vamps Finally, I show you how to add chords to your percussive grooves. This is where you realise the full potential of percussive guitar playing. Percussive Guitar Video TutorialPercussive Guitar Techniques• Muted Slap Use the side of your picking hand thumb to slap the strings of your guitar to get a sound similar to that of a high hat: Percussive Guitar Technique Muted Slap• Bass Drum For a bass drum sound, hit low down on the soundboard of the guitar with the heel of the palm of your picking hand: Percussive Guitar Technique Kick Drum• Toms For a tom sound, use the side of your picking hand thumb to slap the soundboard of your guitar: Percussive Guitar Technique Toms• Snare/Rimshot For a snare/rimshot sound, use the 3rd and 4th fingers of your picking hand to wrap around the side of the guitar Percussive Guitar Technique Snare• Fret Hand Hit Use your fretting hand to slap the side of the guitar just above the neck: Percussive Guitar Technique Fret HandPercussive Guitar Grooves• Percussive Groove 1 This first groove combines the bass drum hit on beats 1 and 3 of the bar with the snare hit on beats 2 and 4: Percussive Guitar Groove 1• Percussive Groove 2 This is the same groove as above with an added high hat. This is sounded by your fretting hand hitting the strings of your guitar in an eighth note rhythm: Percussive Guitar Groove 2• Percussive Groove 3 This groove has the heel of your hand hitting the guitar for a bass drum sound, followed by your thumb slapping the soundboard for the toms.
