rnWe know that you’re just desperate for another oral health issue to worry about. To make this one even better, it’s a long-term problem that most of us are playing catch-up to resolve and improve. It would be nice if every dental issue was as cut and dry as dental caries (the broadest term for cavities) where your immediate actions (brushing, flossing, rinsing, and going to the dentist) can demonstrate improvement in the short-term. With periodontal disease you’ll likely have to go the extra mile and the consequences are heavy, like the all of the consequences in the dental world, but the payoff is grand: a lifetime of healthy, functioning teeth and improved overall health.rnHas your dentist told you that you have periodontal disease? Don’t worry if she has, you’re not alone! It happens to millions of people every year and everyone can be helped if they are willing. Remember those things your dentist tells you to do every day: brushing, flossing, rinsing, avoiding sugary snacks? It’s time to start actually doing those and if you already do, you need to improve your technique. With the dental fundamentals out of the way let’s talk about what this disease might look like.rnYou’ve heard of the term “tartar?” Some of the harmful bacteria in our mouths can form plaque, which is something that you can fight with your daily routines. If the plaque is allowed to linger then it can harden and turn into tartar. You cannot resolve tartar on your own; it must be removed by your dentist or hygienist. rnIf the plaque and tartar are allowed to stick around, so to speak, then you may progress to gingivitis where your gums become inflamed. Your gums may even bleed a little. In this case you can still work with your dental team to resolve the issue and rehabilitate your gums. rnIf the gingivitis isn’t treated then we move toward some more serious risk factors. Your gums may begin to recede and spaces may begin to develop around your teeth. These spaces are ripe for infection. Your immune system will kick in to fight infections and your body’s natural response may lead to gum and bone loss. rnWe’re not trying to scare you. This is just the reality for those who forgo the fundamentals of their oral health. If you need to find the best dentist to set you on the right path, check out http://www.dentaloptimizer.comrn
