Peripheral nerve blocks, a technique of regional anesthesia, work well when a patient needs immediate treatment. It is helpful in correcting sports injuries, treating accidental cases and providing cosmetic treatments. The technique involves blocking a particular area and preparing it for surgery. The anesthesia is provided with the help of portable ultrasound machines.
Regional anesthesia is not a new technique as it has been practiced in hospitals since a long time. It is the use of ultrasound machines that has added new dimensions to this process. Earlier the anesthetics used to find the nerves with their hands. The patient was injected several times to make sure that the nerves are de-sensitized. It was a tedious and challenging process a slight mistake could be detrimental to the overall health of the patient.
With the advent of portable ultrasound machines, regional anesthesia method took U-turn. Now it is not the hands of anesthetics that guide the needle but it is the ultrasound machine that tells the anesthetics which nerve is to be blocked. Use of machine has certainly helped the doctors. The first advantage of this technique is that it has removed pain and suffering from the anesthesia process. Now a patient doesn’t need to be injected several times to get anesthesia.
Peripheral nerve blocks procedure doesn’t require special training as it is conducted with the help of convenient ultrasound machines. It is the latest technique of regional anesthesia that de-sensitizes a particular area that needs to be operated upon. This technique is used when a patient requires minor surgery in specific body part like wrist, ankle, hip and neck.
Scientists are looking for more options to make minor surgeries a happy experience for the patients. Doctors try their best to keep the surgical process painless but they have their limitations. Anesthesia helps remove pain and sensation from the affected body parts but it used to be a painful experience for a patient to get anesthesia until the introduction of peripheral nerve blocks procedure.
Regional anesthesia technique helped doctors treat injury cases with high success rate and the introduction of peripheral nerve blocks procedure made regional anesthesia a painless technique. Now there could be no problems in administering anesthesia to patients and surgeons can treat their patients without any apprehension. Presently this technique is used for minor surgeries but soon you could expect the regional anesthesia process for surgeryof vital body organs.
