Even before there were driveways, there were paths that usually set the tone for the type of home or business to which they led. Cheerful gravel, beautiful brick and colorful stones gave the impression that the upcoming building would be equally or more beautiful. Roadways winding down steep hills or sweeping across sands became the objects of engineering and architectural design focused on safety, durability and aesthetic value.
Most people and business owners want an appealing look to the driveway. The opportunity to have it complement both the building or house and the landscaping is easier than centuries past. One thing that has not improved, however, is the way price interferes with what is desired. Modern technology has produced a way to get the appearance of expensive natural-looking paving material without the high cost.
The first decision regarding paving is what kind of material is right for the area in which you live. Smooth, solid surfaces are generally created with concrete or asphalt. The primary feature is an even, seamless surface. Stones and gravel create the aggregate style of surface.
Tarmac and Asphalt
Typically seen in shades of black or red, tarmac has advanced past the application of tar used to keep dust down on dirt roads. Additives such as sand add to its life. It fills in spaces between other decorative materials on driveways, keeping the project attractive, yet economical. Asphalt is typically included when people consider tarmac. Either way, the area must be prepared the first time a driveway is set down, adding to the expense.
Stamped concrete
Also referred to as patterned or imprinted concrete, homeowners enjoy the look of this low cost, low maintenance driveway. Decorative concrete is thinner than the typical mix, making it easier to customize color and pattern. It requires very little maintenance.
Natural Stone
A driveway of natural stone is expensive because of the mining, transportation and finishing methods. It delivers a warm ambience to its surroundings and lasts for generations. Three of the colorful choices are limestone, slate and sandstone.
Brick
Made by mixing sand, water, cement and fine aggregates, brick creates an exceptional paved driveway. The method of firing delivers a strong product. It is formed in molds of varied sizes, shapes and height, providing the opportunity to mix and match the overall design of your driveway to your liking. Each brick must be placed by hand, making it an expensive choice.
Gravel
Modified gravel contains fine pieces that help bind the small rocks together. Relatively inexpensive, gravel sheds water efficiently. If there is a great deal of traffic or heavy vehicles and equipment, the gravel is ground into the dirt, rather than staying above the surface.
The majority of people cannot tell the difference between a high quality diamond and similar quality cubic zirconia. It closely resembles the chosen natural paving material, while providing long life and aesthetic appeal at a fraction of the cost of the real thing.
