Through all of the problems with healthcare, many of the increased costs can be traced to increased expenses within pharmaceuticals. Americans are often becoming more conscious of their health and with that comes increased doctor visits and likely trips to the pharmacist as we, as a nation, are prescribed more drugs that ever before. Doctors and pharmacists do what they can to better inform individuals about the changes in medications and treatments, but the population itself has become much better informed and pharma social media has been largely responsible. Pharma social media has many pros and cons unfortunately. Being aware of the content created by users has become wildly important, but also pretty difficult due to the sheer amount of misinformation still exists. The most common areas that people are looking for information on are related to new medications in treating everything from the common cold to cancer. Analyzing prescription drugs and other pharmaceutical treatments is quite common on social media and the results are not published in scientifically accurate ways. In fact, many times there aren't any facts or sources and stories without a shred of truth are constantly repeated across various social media and forums and message boards. Because of the dangerous nature of social media, television and radio still have their place. The spending on television and radio are considerably more significant than the spending on internet for pharmaceutical companies. It's true because big pharma companies know they can control the message being presented on the television, in print, and on radio. Given that, pharma companies have to face the internet and social media, even with all of the potential pitfalls that they contain. The rise of the internet has made finding the best pharmaceutical treatments easier, but it can be harder if the patient isn't able to separate the wheat from the chaff in regards to what material exists within Pharma Social Media. Individuals are in greater control of their own content and can research any potential pharmaceutical options and other alternative treatments. The downside is seen when a given company or pharmaceutical entity is damaged by untrue or misleading information. When that type of information hits the mainstream, users of pharma social media can only multiply the problem, often unknowingly, as more and more people compound the problem by sharing what they find and those who read them are often others that potentially need that pharmaceutical treatment. In time, the myth is accepted as fact and any response from the company is seen as spin and a cover up. With big pharma already having a bad name, any attempts at damage control can do more harm than good even when facts are presented independently. This means that controlling pharma social media is an absolute must. Creating a strategy, ASAP, to prevent these types of issues involves having a coherent message presented by a public relations firm that is well versed in pharma social media. With information quickly spreading and permanently archived in the popular search engines, the value of pharmaceutical companies having control of their social media is invaluable. Not only is it important to know what they post and reach their target audience, but it's also important to know consistently what is being said about them online and elsewhere. It can be even more important to know why the falsehoods that are present exist. A lot of firms face these challenge and those that prevent them with preventive care, can have significant edges.
