Make sure that the operator you choose is recognized by the government and does not take you on ride when it comes to pricing. In short both money and time should be saved. Beware of touts; make your purchases from authorized stores. Never ever hire transportation from unauthorized operators. When it comes to hiring taxis and auto-rickshaws-take them from pre-paid booths.
A list of emergency numbers should be stored with you in case of any urgent situation. The numbers may include your tour operator, police, hospital, and your embassy or consulate contact number. Foreigners can pay their bills in foreign currency but they could keep some India currency along for roadside shopping, for attending fares and fests.
India is geographically diverse so the temperatures also are varied. The best time to visit the southern and central part of the country is November onwards while hill stations can be visited in summer months. Light cotton clothing must be packed along, if traveling in summer. If traveling in summer, adequate fluids should be taken. While as winter baggage should comprise of coats, sweaters, thermals and other woolen wear.
It is not unsafe to travel India but care must be taken that you don’t roam around at isolated places at late hours. Moreover, care must be taken that you must not go to places which are proscribed By Government of India for tourists. Entertainment can be thrilling but it is not worth your security.
India is a hospitable country and don’t feel agitated if locals ask you personal questions. It is just their way of making you comfortable and makes you feel like one of their own. Make sure that you respect religious places in India. Preferably, put down your foot wear while going to religious places. Avoid eating at roadside eateries as it can make you ill. Also avoid taking food from strangers.
