Just because denture cream is OTC (over the counter) doesn’t mean it can’t hurt you! Most of the population is unaware that denture creams can be hazardous to their health.

If you think you have experienced the debilitating symptoms of denture cream poisoning it is important to ask a trusted health care provider to test your zinc and copper levels as soon as you suspect that there is a problem. A diagnosis of zinc poisoning or copper deficiency can be made by your doctor with a simple blood test.
Recommended daily range of zinc intake is about 8 mg for healthy adult women and 11 for likewise men. The largest amount any healthy adult should ever ingest in one day is in the range of 40 or fewer mg.

Digestion of too much zinc oxide can severely limit the natural metabolism of copper, resulting in a copper deficiency and potentially severe or even life threatening neurological damage.

Acute zinc toxicity is characterized by gastric distress, dizziness and nausea. Symptoms of chronic toxicity include gastric problems, decreased serum Ceruloplasmin activity and Hypocupremia, decreased lymphocyte stimulation to PHA and reduced HDL cholesterol. • Diminished ability to move the arms, hands, legs and/or feet
  • Numbness or tingling in the arms, legs, fingers and/or toes
  • Poor balance
  • Unexplained pain in extremities
  • Unsteady gait or stride (ataxia)

If you are a denture wearer and you have experienced any of these symptoms of denture cream poisoning, your levels of Zinc and Copper in your blood stream should be evaluated by your physician.

When excessive levels of Zinc are identified in a neurologically compromised patient it is essential to question if the chronic overuse of denture cream containing zinc is a primary contributing factor:

One patient in the University of Texas study, "a 57-year-old man, developed numbness and tingling in his toes, which progressed over 3 to 4 months to involve his legs, hands, and lower torso. He then developed trouble walking owing to imbalance and had increasingly frequent falls. His hands felt clumsy, and he began dropping objects. He reported several instances of urinary incontinence in the weeks before presentation… Owing to the patient's excessive use of denture adhesive, which contains zinc, serum concentrations of copper and zinc were measured… The patient was diagnosed with copper deficiency myeloneuropathy due to zinc toxicity from his denture adhesive".
