Every year, around one lakh of people around the world are diagnosed with prostate cancer disease, this indicates that this is the most common cancer that occurs in men in the world. When cells in the prostate gland grow abnormally and irregularly, then this leads to cancer disease. The severity of this cancer disease is characterized by the growing rate of cancerous cells in the prostate gland, as the malignant cells can grow with fast rate or slowly. When cells grow slowly, then a person doesn’t know that he is being attacked by this killer disease. The rapid and multiple growths of cancerous cells increase chances of cells spreading to other parts of the body. The disease is very common in men above the age group of 45. Prostate cancer is a serious disease, but with the advancement of technology, there are a variety of healing therapies that aid in healing this dreadful disease in a successful way. Surgery and radiation therapies are the most common treatment techniques which are being used in all cancer care hospitals. Surgery Surgery is the most common healing method which is suggested when malignant tumor is in the initial stage and it has not spread to the adjacent parts of the cells. In this technique, the whole tumor is cut out from the prostate gland. Patients for surgery The surgery for the prostate gland is performed when doctors confirm that the cancerous cells are confined in the prostate gland. The physical health condition and strong immune system play vital role for this treatment. An ideal age of a patient must be below than the 70 years. In addition, the type of surgery depends on the stage and grade of the prostate cancer. Some of the popular surgeries for this cancer are cryosurgery, laparoscopic radical prostatectomy, perineal surgery, laparoscopic surgery, retropubic surgery and transurethral resection. Recovery after surgery Patients need to stay in hospital for sometimes after the surgery procedure. The recovery depends on the physical status and immunity power of a patient. But, normally patients need to stay for only 4-5 days after this procedure. Radiation therapy Radiation therapy is one of the important therapies for the prostate cancer treatment which aim to destroy the cancerous cells in the prostate gland using radiation beams. This technique is carried out by two methods External radiation therapy and Internal radiation therapy. Two types of radiation therapies are available for prostate cancer treatment External radiation therapy This is a type of radiation therapy which is done by exposing the radiation beams on the affected areas from externally. It is also called as radiotherapy. This procedure is given to the patients for 5 days in a week. The doctors mark the affected areas and give radiation beams on that part only. The whole procedure gets over in around 5-6 weeks. Internal radiation therapy As the name suggested, in this method, the radiation beams are targeted on the affected areas internally. In this technique, some seeds that contain radioactive energy are placed into the cancerous parts of the prostate gland. The seeds emit radiation beam for sometimes and once these radioactive seeds die, they lie in the prostate gland harmlessly. The whole procedure takes only one hour. However, doctors don’t suggest this procedure for the advance stage of prostate cancer.
