Early history
Generally speaking, the modern concept of the poster came into existence in 1870, when colour lithography was perfected to a level that allowed mass production of the same image on a large scale possible. Posters in a more general form have been in existence in the form of placards and posed bills for many hundreds of years; advertising Shakespearian plays and as well as giving government declarations to people throughout history .
It was however, as previously mentioned, the invention of lithography in 1796 that kick started the creation of posters and other similar items on a large scale, as opposed to hand written notes that promoted events. By the 1890s the technique had spread from its beginnings in Germany and into the rest of Europe. Many well known artists at this time produced poster images as art, including Henri de Toulouse-Lautrec and Jules Cheret. The latter artist is considered the father of modern advertising poster placards.
Cheret’s use of contrasting colours and bright imagery lead to striking posters that advertised over 1000 items and events, mainly for exhibitions, theatre events, and various products. Cheret’s style of bright colours and innovative typography appealed greatly to advertisers, as it drew the eyes and attention of customers greatly and so was far more effective than anything that went before.
Commercial usage
In a commercial regard, posters have been used since the early 20th century in a successful manner throughout Europe and America. It however took the 1960s pop art movement to really bring the use of stylised posters to life in a whole new manner. Posters of Che Guevara became iconic of the time period and the political changes that were happening at the time.
There are a whole host of methods that can be used to produce posters, with most methods leaving the back of the poster white so that firstly it is clear which side is to be applied to the wall or surface, and secondly to make it easier to apply it to said wall. Posters are still used generally as a form of advertising or promotion for a person, group, or product. However, it is becoming more common for posters to be used for political causes and other such informative devices; this being typified by army recruitment posters in the UK and America.
