PPC Advertising Helps Businesses Draw Qualified Traffic to Their Website
Competition for the top spot in organic search results has always been pretty fierce, but with recent improvements to Google’s search algorithm, it has become even tougher for small websites to rank well. Unfortunately, with better results, there are fewer pages searchers browse through before finding what they’re looking for, making it even more important to be on the first page, even as it becomes more difficult. Pay-per-click, or PPC, advertising is an effective way to get close to the top of the search engine result pages when you’re not able to do so with SEO alone. You “bid“ on a position, but only pay when someone clicks on your ad, no matter how often it is displayed. If a high proportion of the people who click on your PPC ad buy from your website, it can be a highly profitable way to drive people to your business. PPC ads are displayed on the top and side of the search engine results pages. Currently, Google places three ads at the top of the results and eight more along the side. Google chooses which ad to display based on the keywords used in the search. When you set up your PPC advertising campaign you’ll select the keywords you want your ad to display under, and how much you’ll pay if someone clicks on it. The more you pay, the higher up the list your ad will display. PPC advertising means you only pay when someone clicks on your ad and visits your website, no matter how many times it’s displayed. With the right keywords, this means you’re bringing qualified shoppers right to your website. Selecting a keyphrase like “buy t-shirts online” helps pre-qualify the traffic, so you get someone who not only wants what you’re selling, but is looking to buy. Remember though, the well-qualified keywords are also the most expensive. When starting a campaign, the first thing you need to know is which keywords people looking for your website are using to search. Avoid keywords you already rank highly for, but you might want to select keywords your competitors rank highly for that you don’t. There are a bunch of keyword tools online, the best one is Google’s keyword tool. It provides the keyword, the competition for advertising on that keyword, which affects how much you’ll pay, and the number of searches on the keyword each month. You should also look at how much people are paying for those keywords, after all, if you can only make a few dollars off a sale, there’s no point in paying five dollars for a click. You also want to make sure you are able to bid enough money to get a decent position. Paying to be on the third or fourth page won’t generate enough clicks to really impact your bottom line. The top keywords can be quite expensive, but you can get a higher place by optimizing your landing page. To prevent people taking advantage of searchers, Google examines the landing pages to see make sure they are relevant to the keywords. Create a strong call to action and provide a selection of products, and you may rank a little higher than someone paying more. Watch your campaign after you’ve launched it, so you only run your most effective ads. Make sure the traffic coming in is buying from your website and that your ads are click on as often as possible when they’re displayed. PPC ads are a very effective way of driving qualified customers to your website. Careful keyword selection and budgeting for front-page placement could help you drastically increase the profitability of your website.
