Often you go to a networking meeting with the hopes of meeting that special contact that helps you in your business; but then nothing comes from the contact you made. Just being there isn’t enough. Networking is a serious and studied commitment if you are going to reap big rewards. It’s also a lot of hard work. Maximizing the opportunities available to you by practicing the H.U.M philosophy of networking will create the new customers you seek. Pay close attention to this very important strategy and don’t look to cut any corners. It does hold the promise of big returns for all involved.
The process to take command of your networking efforts is what I call the H.U.M Philosophy of Networking:
• Hear people’s needs
• Understand people’s business
• Mention their names to possible sources they might find useful
Everyone is unique in some way. People think and respond differently. For example, how do people in your network feel about what’s going on in the economy? Are they looking for a specific type of person to employ? Perhaps their need is space for leasing. All you have to do to find out is ask; then listen. Truly listening to the needs of others helps you establish a solid foundation for building a lasting, winning relationship.
The best way to get an understanding of you fellow members’ business is to visit their business location. Other steps to take for a better understanding of a member’s business is to read up on the subject in trade magazines.
Mentioning the names of your fellow networkers and their business is a simple act and should be done at every available opportunity. With every mention, you are reinforcing your dedication as a serious networker and you are helping to develop possible lasting relationships with those you mention.
In the true spirit of the Triple-Win Theory, you will all be winners by practicing the H.U.M. Philosophy.
Hearing the needs of your networking associates and understanding what you can do to help them fuels the networking process. When you mention the names of others in your networking of key contacts, you are truly committed to the Giver’s Gain Philosophy and the power of building a loyal and powerful network of contacts.
Are you mentioning the names of others?
