Basically, the prebiotics and probiotics in yogurt have turned a small industry into a billion dollar one based on myths and false advertizing and allows them to charge up to twice as much simply for the inclusion of a small amount of bacteria. There is also the problem that the manufacturers of these yogurts adding copious amounts of sweeteners like high fructose corn syrup. This is especially damaging to children's teeth and overall health and would far outweigh any benefits gained from the bacteria, if there were any in the first place. So if you must use these products, check they have the most beneficial type of bacteria called lactobacillus plantarum, and plenty of them. If you want the maximum health benefits, it is best to eat prebiotic foods or take a quality supplement. It should be noted that prebiotics are much more beneficial than probiotics. Probiotics add unknown quantities of bacteria to your gut and hope for the best while prebiotics naturally increase your good bacteria while reducing the bad ones. The best foods are kiwifruit, Jerusalem artichokes, raw oats, raw garlic, raw onions and raw honey.
