Once you have decided to study abroad and explore the world around you, fasten up your belt and start your homework. Preparing to study abroad has two main facets: the personal and the academic. Amongst the personal ones are learning about the local culture of your study abroad destination so that you will jell in and have a comfy, enjoyable experience. The academic ones involve learning the academic skills you will need to be competitive with your peers in your study field, so your educational experience is both less tense and more productive for you. Once you have chosen the university you will attend and have been admitted to it, read about it thoroughly. You can browse through their website, catalogues, promotional material, any and everything about it which will provide a full range of information about their facilities, programs, services, academic course offerings, faculties, extracurricular activities, scholarships, and its overall environment. In addition to course offerings, see what special services are available to foreign students, particularly in the area of improving your academic English skills. Often such courses are available to foreign students free of charge. But also explore what other facilities and services, for example, libraries and student health services, are available to you. Knowing what your university provides will help you make better decisions about what you should bring with you from your country of origin, to make sure that all of your personal needs are met. Another very important consideration is that of your accommodation. Give some thought to your preferred lodging and the place where you would like to stay. Once you reach your destination it may be difficult for you to find a place to stay. It’s better to know where you will be living before you reach there. You can either live in the university dorms or in Home Stay; some even live out on their own. Many international students start living in Home Stay when they first arrive. This gives them a chance to live with a family in the destination country and bend to their sounding before making the decision to live out on their own. Adequate academic preparation for your particular study-abroad program is also very important. Finally, if there is a specific aspect of your chosen field of study, such as statistics, that you know is difficult but that you have only a slight grasp of, take classes or find private tutoring in it before you attempt advance courses abroad This will help you to compete in a stress free environment where you will consider yourself to be at par with your student counterparts. Last but not the least is “Mental preparation” which is essential because you would not only be leaving your own country and living in a completely foreign country; but at the same time you would have to leave your friends, family and your surroundings which will make you homesick often. Therefore being mentally prepared for all this is very important and something you should be ready for.
