There are many reasons you may be preparing to sell your home. You may be moving to new city, moving to a bigger home and have some other priorities you need to take care of. The longer you have stayed in the home, the more emotions you have associated with it. The first thing you need to do is disassociate yourself from the home. You do this by gradually beginning to pack things away.

Start with all the knick knacks that you have put up in the home -all the family photographs, trophies, and works of art by the kids. Do it room and by room and box them all up if you plan to take it all to the new place that you are going to. Once that is done, the walls will be bare and you will have a better look at some of the repair work that needs to be done. Patch up holes where there were nails, give the walls a touch up when it comes to the paint. Look at the corners for any peeling or leakage so that you have your list of plumbing work also set out for you.

One of the common ways to sell a house is to approach an agent, who will advise you to have open house. This is where people interested in your home, will come over and check out the house for themselves. In such cases you will need to prepare the house in every possible way to make a good impression. Clearing out all the clutter is very important especially in the kitchen and in the bedroom closets. People tend to open everything and look through to figure out whether the amenities you have will suit them or not. So having a closet that has a lot stuffed into it is a no-no.

When clearing your closets and the house, start boxing up what you plan to take with you and sort the rest for discarding or giving away. This way, as you are preparing for your open house, you are also getting your packing done. On the day of the open house, try not to be in the house when people are looking around, but stay out in the yard or the patio where they can meet you and ask any questions that they may have.

Preparing to sell your home happens at several levels – an emotional as well as practical one. Doing it right will help you make a good sale.
