You can make sure that any money you give gets into the right hands. Just remember these tips when somebody asks you for a donation.nn• Ask for identification - the organization AND the solicitor. Once you hand over your share, you'll never see it or the con artist again.nnTHE BANK EXAMINERnnA con artist will contact you and tell you he is a bank official or police officer and that he needs your help to catch a dishonest bank teller. All you have to do is withdraw your savings and give the money to him so he can check the serial numbers. IF you do, you've been "stung". A real bank official would NEVER ask you to withdraw your money.nnIs it hard to believe that people fall for such tricks? Con artists may be the greatest actors you'll ever meet. The pigeon drop and the bank examiner schemes are two of the most successful con games around. Don't be fooled. CALL THEIR BLUFF BEFORE IT'S TOO LATE.nnTELEPHONE CHARITY CALLSnnWith the holidays around the corner the phones will heat up with dishonest people calling to ask for money for a particular charity. Some may be legitimate, others not. Here are a few tips to prevent you from becoming a victim of fraud.nn1. When a call comes in get the name of the caller, or ID #. Ask for a phone number.n2. Ask the caller for a website or other means to verify their validity.n3. Request to pay by check to the charity and ask for a receipt.n4. Don’t be pressured into giving. If the caller does pressure you, simply hang up.n5. Avoid any charity that wants to “come right over” to collect the money.n6. Be cautious of promises of guaranteed sweepstakes winnings in exchange for a contribution. 7. 7.According to U.S. law, you never have to give a donation to be eligible to win a sweepstakes.n8. After receiving a call asking for a donation, call the charity in question to find out whether it is aware of the solicitation and has authorized the use of its name.nn
