Last year, a steady stream of women (and some men) to visit my office asking about the drug Latisse, a product that darkens, lengthens and thickens lashes, and it is safe use. Before analyzing the specific information about this medicine, it is important to understand what the safe use of the term really means.

Drug safety is determined and controlled by the U.S. Organization and Drug Administration (FDA). In fact, many other countries around the world are also based on strict FDA standards for drug safety. Before a drug can be approved for public use by the FDA, it must first pass through a sequence of clinical trials to establish their effectiveness, efficiency and safety. If a drug meets that standard to be approved for general use (over-the-counter) or restricted (Doctor's prescription required). A drug is usually placed in conditions of restricted use if it is potentially dangerous if misused, if it has the potential for abuse, side effects, if they are potentially serious, or if more data should be collected in the spectrum and intensity their side effects.

Latisse falls under restricted category, which means it can only be used under the supervision of a physician. The FDA found that the drug is safe if used as directed, with the caveat that the person may experience side effects that can be mild to severe. However, this approval is based on a statistical analysis of data from clinical trials and can not be applied directly to individual cases. Thus, the crucial question is whether the product is safe for you. Indeed, medical science can not give you this guarantee, we each have a unique metabolic profile that is based on genetics, physiology, lifestyle and living conditions. For this reason it is important to monitor how you react to a drug and report any side effects you experience with your doctor, no matter how trivial they may seem to you at this point.
