How do you invest in yourself? That's easy... know all you can about the private investigation business before presenting yourself to an employer for a full time position.

Many of the applications received by PI agencies are from inexperienced people who are either straight out of school or wanting to make the transition from another profession.

The problem with the latter is, many bank on the experience they have in their current profession getting their "leg in the door" of an agency. That's probably not going to cut it.

An agency boss may be interested in the skill you already possess but his business is all about investigations and protection and if you haven't at least has some training in this area then you are "putting yourself on the back foot."

2. Contact several of the agencies in your area and ask them what type of investigations they do and more importantly, what skill sets they are looking for. If they require someone proficient in computer science and you happen to possess that skill then you are in a good position.

3. If you have some extra time, ask if they would be interested in using you for some free work experience. This is a great way to get on-the-job training and experience and again, will put you in a solid position when it's time for you to apply for any private investigation jobs.
