The presence of pond bacteria does bring about a good amount of benefits for the rest of the elements in one's pond. However, it is important for one to have some knowledge about the basics of these bacteria and what they can do for the entire pond.

A pond is definitely a delightful addition to one's outdoor garden. It provides additional aesthetic value to the area and at the same time, it helps keep the place cool since water's presence has that effect. Unlike mini-waterfalls though, waters in the pond are not as dynamic. This can be a source of problems such as the possibilities of mosquitoes living in this stagnant water.

It is highly recommended for ponds to have a pump in order to assure that the water is properly regulated. In addition to the pump, one should also encourage the presence of bacteria in the pond.

There are, however, two types of bacteria that reside in the ponds. The good ones are called aerobic bacteria that are there for the purpose of breaking down organic wastes before further harm can be done on the quality of the water in the pond. These waste materials include excess food, dead aquatic plants, the waste of fishes and other aquatic creatures in the pond as well as possible fertilizer runoff that have managed to get to the pond.

Bad ones, on the other hand, are referred to as anaerobic bacteria. They are the ones responsible for any bad odors coming from the pond as well as the water's poor quality. These are the ones that should not be in excessive amount. Otherwise, there are going to be some problems with the pond water's quality.

To maintain the wellbeing of the pond, the whole ecosystem in the pond should be balanced. Any cases where the naturally helpful pond bacteria are outnumbered by the negative elements and wastes in the pond are sure to end up badly. Examples include having fish overpopulation, debris contamination as a result of flooding or hard rain as well as simple overfeeding of the fishes. This situation can be so bad that it leads to the death of the fishes and similar pond creatures.

It is possible that the number of beneficial bacteria in the pond is not sufficient to keep up with the tasks they have to perform to maintain the equilibrium in the pond. As a result of not being able to break down all the waste materials in the pond, there is a possibility of the oxygen level decreasing significantly.

Because of these grave possibilities, homeowners are advised to regularly add beneficial bacteria in the pond. Doing this weekly or monthly at the most is sure to bring about great results. Good quality bacteria formulations specifically developed for ponds are easily accessible these days. It also helps to have a fountain or an aerator in order to heighten the presence of oxygen in the pond.

The word bacteria might generally sound negative, but there are good uses for such elements. Good pond bacteria, for example, are one of the essentials behind a well-maintained pond.
