You may think that brushing your teeth is a simple thing; after all, you have been doing it your entire life right? Well it may not be as simple as you think. There are many variables such as when to brush, how often, how long, and how to select the proper tooth brush. Read on to find the answers to all of these and more. The aspect of teeth brushing that most people get wrong is how long to do it. To brush your teeth properly, you should brush them for a full two minutes. Most adults do not brush for nearly two minutes. You should time your brushing the next time you do it to get an idea for how long you are currently brushing. You might be surprised how little time you actually spend brushing your teeth. Children have a very hard time with this because they view it as a chore. There are new toothbrushes now that will play a song and they can stop brushing when the song is over. It works very well and it also makes it more fun for the kids. rnThe next important aspect of brushing your teeth properly is brushing technique. You should brush using small, gentle circular motions. You should also make sure to brush all areas of your mouth including the inside and outside surfaces of the teeth, your gums, and your tongue as well. Refraining from opening your mouth fully, as this can make it harder to get to the lower sides of the teeth and gums. There is no need to brush very hard. Tooth plaque can be removed by a small tissue so even the most delicate of brushing with a soft brush is adequate enough. It is important to brush in the morning when you wake up, again after eating, and then once more before bed. Keeping this schedule will keep your teeth free of food and bacteria, which will prevent cavities from forming. This is a good discipline to teach your children early too. This will set them up for good oral health care behaviors as they grow up. Understanding the importance of oral health is very important, especially to the youth. Choosing the proper toothbrush is important as well. Most dentist recommend soft bristled toothbrushes that have a small head. These brushes are gentle on teeth, remove plaque well , and are easy to get to hard to reach places in your mouth. Powered or electric tooth brushes are a good option as well. They make brushing easier and can be more effective as well. Another important aspect of tooth brushes is when to get a new one. You should replace your tooth brush when it shows signs of wear or at least every few months. This will insure that your tooth brush is giving you the best brush possible. So follow this tooth brushing advice and you will enjoy better dental health, more beautiful teeth, and most importantly, fewer cavities! I wish you good oral health.
