You have probably watched a lot of shows lately that encourage people to do projects around the house on their own in order to save some money. That is great, if you have a little bit of knowledge in the subject, but most people don’t. What those shows don’t show is the behind the scenes instances when a professional needs to be called to clean up the mess the owner started and didn’t finish! There are a lot of pros and cons to consider before you take on a plumbing project on your own. 1) Saving money or spending more on a fix Everyone loves to save money. When you can do a plumbing repair or install on your own, you will certainly save some money by not paying a professional to come to your house and do it. If the job is small and simple, than kudos to you for trying something new and succeeding around the house. The con to saving money is that it might not save you money at all, but cost more. What happens when you do something wrong and the leak gets worse or the appliance doesn’t work after installation? You now have to pay money for a professional plumber to come in and clean up your mistakes. Not only are you embarrassed for causing another screw-up, but you spent the money you were supposed to have saved 2) Time well spent or time wasted Part of the appeal with doing it yourself is the time you get to think and fix problems within your house. You are tinkering with the pipes, thinking you have a problem fixed. Or do you? The con to time well spent is only if the fix or installation works. Suddenly, when a pipe is squirting water or the dishwasher is leaking all over the floor that time seems wasted instead of well spent. Now your time is wasted, plus you have to pay for a professional plumber to come over and fix the mess. That time could have been spent doing something else, like golfing or swimming or gardening. 3) Worry over safety or professional When you do it yourself, you don’t have to worry about the integrity of the person coming in to your house. It’s you! So there is a positive to not hiring outside help and not having to worry over what they see in your house. rnThe con is that sure, you might worry about their integrity, but what about your know how? If you screw up a job, you will have to hire someone to come in and fix it. There are always bad apples in the bunch, but you can easily find professional plumbers with a great reputation who will come in to your house and perform great work. rnThere will always be pros and cons in every situation. You need to carefully weigh them and see which ones make more sense for you - hire a professional and do it yourself.
