So, you have a goal, and you know someone who has already achieved it. Before you simply duplicate what another has done to attain it, consider the message contained in the Parable of the Jackrabbit:
"A man was on a jou
ey and came to a field. In this field he observed a dog, jumping around, darting to and fro, disappearing in the long grass each time he landed. The man stayed back, fearing that the dog had a terrible disease that caused him to jerk wildly and bark incessantly. Cautiously, he passed along the side of the field on the well-paved path, keeping an eye on the ravenous dog to be sure it did not harm him.
"Coming to the end of the field, suddenly the dog appeared in front of him, holding a jackrabbit in its jaws. Placidly, the dog glanced at the man, and walked away. It was then that the man realized that the dog's bizzare behavior was nothing more than a simple rabbit chase.
"This man was hungry. Thinking about the dog, he decided it would sure be nice if he could have a rabbit to eat, too. So he turned around, retraced his steps along the path for a time, and entered the grassy field. "Well, here I go," he said, and began to jump and dart, growl and bark. Up and down, back and forth, trying to duplicate all of the movements in proper sequence that he had seen the dog perform, believing this would produce a rabbit for him as well. All day long he did this, and at the end of the day, he was still hungry, and very, very tired.
"The moral of the story:
"You must not simply DO what the winners do; you must learn to THINK the way they think. Chase your dream only when it is in clear view. If it is, you’ll naturally know just what to do." (by Leslie Householder, derived from the award winning, inte
ational best seller, "The Jackrabbit Factor")
It’s interesting to realize that not only did duplicating the dog NOT produce a rabbit, but it probably kept them very far away.
I remember buying into a handful of personal development programs years ago. After all of my efforts to do what I had been told to succeed, I was easily frustrated because my results never amounted to all of their advertised testimonials of big success.
Now, I understand that I was jumping and growling at air, all the while expecting a rabbit to APPEAR.
In reality, I had no expectation or vision of living the success they promised. I couldn't even picture what it would be like to prosper. All I knew was that there was never enough money, and in reality, that scenario was all I expected. I have only seen a significant increase in the degree to which I enjoy prosperity since having a rabbit (or dream) in clear view that I could chase and capture for myself.
There are numerous business oppportunities that have been discarded when they "didn't work." What really happened is that the person probably followed all the directions perfectly but never saw a rabbit. They did everything their instruction manual told them to do (“bark twice, jump left, chase right…”) and instead of attracting a rabbit, they scared them all away.
Such misdirected activity is extremely time consuming, but ultimately fruitless.
Now, the author of the program is not necessarily to blame for this misguidance, because it is likely that s/he accurately described the steps that s/he took to succeed. However, the most critical step, deciding what you want, is rarely taken as seriously as it should be. Doing this is spotting the rabbit. It is the first key to unlocking the secret to success in the pursuit of prosperity. It is the step that sets in motion all of the events and encounters that will be attracted to you as you begin the chase.
In truth, you would be better off absolutely clear on the prize with NO knowledge whatsoever of how to attain it, than you would be to be vague on the prize and abundant with how-to knowledge.
With the prize in sight, the pursuit literally becomes as instinctive as a dog chasing a rabbit. Remember, nobody had to tell the dog which way to jump... he simply follows the dream.
So, identify your dream, visualize it, get excited about it, and get moving! Don’t jump because someone told you it’s time to jump… jump because that’s the way your rabbit leaps.
