Proteins are large organic molecules that consist of amino acids linked together. There exist about 20 different amino acids and half of them your dog can create for themselves. The other 10, the essential amino acids, need to be available in the dog food and it is best if the 10 non-essential ones are present as well.
Dog food should at least contain protein, which can be digested to break down to it's building blocks – the amino acids. There is protein in many natural objects that are too complex and cannot be broken down; hair is an example and does not provide any nutrition benefits.
Sources that are high in protein are mainly of animal origin such as meat, fish, eggs, and dairy products. However there is protein in vegetable products. Soy is very popular and has a high protein value. I personally feed my dog corn based products which is easy for him to digest and utilize.
Fish is a good source of high quality protein. Fish muscle contains iodine and because bones are frequently ground when preparing the fish, there is a good source of calcium and phosphorus is also provided. The flesh of oily fish contains vitami
A & D and omega 3. Fish are commonly divided into two groups; white fish, such as haddock, plaice, cod, whiting and sole and oily fish, such as herring, pilchards, mackerel, sardines, tuna, salmon and trout.
Meats are generally great sources of protein, essential fatty acids, iron and some B group vitamins. They also increase the taste of a product and have a high digestibility. The animal based materials used in pet foods come from animals which are veterinary inspected and are passed as fit for human consumption but which are surplus to the requirements of the human food industry. The pets of owners worldwide are loved and cherished and the pet food industry has very high standard to meet. These materials meet the very high safety and quality. They generally include beef, lamb, poultry, pork, fish, rabbit and game.
Dogs in general need large quantities of protein. The exact need for protein can vary though with certain life stages such as growth, pregnancy, lactation or physical performances as more new cells need to be built or renewed. An example would be working dogs or race dogs compared with dogs that spend the majority of their time indoors lounging. The diet needed for a dog can be compared to that of a human. Athletes must consume more calories and more protein to repair their working muscles. An example could be the sled racing dogs in Alaska eat more protein and calories than a lap dog that is pampered. Also when your dog is recovering from illness he could very much use extra protein. One tricky part I saw one of my dear friends suffer with was when his dog was having kidney problems and he increased his protein intake thinking it would be beneficial. An increase in protein puts more stress on the kidneys. Please consult your vet on your dogs’ diet and health conditions.
I myself eat a very high protein diet and I believe fish is the way to implement into your diet. I do the same for my dog where I feed him fish products to put good protein into his diet.
