Psoriasis a skin condition that causes raised bumpy patches. Psoriasis is a chronic autoimmune condition that causes issues with the skin. And it’s so much more than the physical symptoms you probably associate with it. There are several different types of psoriasis. Psoriasis causes the skin to regenerate more quickly than normal. Typically, your skin cells go through a cycle known as cell turnover, starting deep in your skin and slowly rising to the surface. Usually, this takes about a month, it can take only a few days when you have psoriasis, causing the skin cells to rise too fast and pile up on the surface of your skin. Because of this, people who have psoriasis can have flare-ups that cause the characteristic itchy, scaly skin patches to show up on their skin.

Types of psoriasis

Most people with psoriasis have plaque psoriasis, which presents as elevated, scaly patches known as plaques. While many tend to associate psoriasis with redness, the color of plaques actually depends on your skin color. Plaques may tend to appear brown or violet with gray scales on darker skin and red or pink with silvery-white scales on lighter skin. According to the Mayo Clinic, other types of psoriasis include: guttate psoriasis, which shows up as small, dot like lesions; inverse psoriasis, which presents as smooth and shiny lesions in body folds, like under the arms and breasts; and pustular psoriasis, which looks like white, pus-filled blisters. Lastly, erythrodermic psoriasis is a very severe and rare form of psoriasis. It causes flushed skin over most of the body, severe itching and pain, and flaking.
