Many people need help and guidance at certain points during their lives. Humans often struggle with difficult decisions. Many times, we reach a proverbial crossroads in our lives and are unsure which path to take. Sometimes, these decisions are accompanied by stress, struggle and emotional trauma. There are many well-trained and educated professionals who have the skills, knowledge and experience necessary to help guide us on our way. These people do not tell others how to live their lives. Rather, they help their patients and clients look inward to determine what is important to them and which path, decision or idea will give them the most happiness and satisfaction. Psychologists, spiritual counselors and life coaches all have the ability to help people navigate life’s path.
The Psychologist
A psychologist is an individual who has completed many years of education and training. Psychologists must complete a doctoral degree prior to starting their practice. Most licensed psychologists who offer one-on-one therapy have obtained a PhD, a PsyD or an EdD. They obtain these degrees after many years of study and supervised training. Psychologists have the education and training necessary to help individuals who are struggling with life issues and mental health problems. They can treat patients of all ages and people from many different backgrounds. Most commonly, psychologists help people overcome emotional trauma, such as the death of a loved one. They also help people beat addiction, manage chronic physical and mental illnesses, and overcome self-imposed barriers to that keep people from living the lives they desire.
Psychologists utilize many different treatment options to help their patients. They administer various assessments and tests that help diagnose a person’s condition or help understand the way that they think, feel and act. Depending on their findings, psychologists can administer various means of treatments. Psychologists may recommend pharmaceutical treatments and drug therapies. They also use various methods of cognitive, behavioral and interpersonal therapies to treat their patients, either separate from pharmaceutical methods or in conjunction with drug therapy.
The Spiritual Counselor
Spirituality is an intrinsic part of who we are as human beings. A person’s religious and spiritual beliefs shape the way they think, feel and behave. Often times, a spiritual crisis has the same ramifications of a life crisis or traumatic life event. When these types of crises arise, individuals seek the assistance and guidance of a spiritual counselor.
A spiritual counselor is often a member of the individual’s church, synagogue or temple. They have the same or similar religious and spiritual beliefs as the person whom they are helping. Spiritual counselors often help their clients move beyond their adolescent ideas of religion and spirituality and help transform those beliefs into more mature convictions. These new convictions often cover many adult topics such as parenting, financial decisions, and family leadership. Most spirituality issues manifest themselves as psychological issues. A spiritual counselor has the ability to guide their charge in prayer, confession, pilgrimage, retreats, and various other religious rituals to help them find their religious center. A spiritual counselor can often help their client reset their inner moral compass and come to the best decision that brings peace to their hearts, minds, and lives.
The Life Coach
If you are struggling with the best ways to achieve your personal goals – whether they are family based, career based, or emotionally based – a life coach might be a great asset to you. A life coach is an individual who is trained to help their clients consider, set, and achieve their own personal life goals. Life coaches work with their clients, listen to their feelings and hopes, and help expand their dreams. They often inspire their charges to broaden their horizons and think about the things in life that would bring them the most happiness and personal satisfaction. Life coaches accomplish these tasks by employing sophisticated listening and communication tools that convey a thoughtful, trustworthy, and accomplished partner to travel with you on your path through life.
Life coaches have the ability to help set a person on the path to success. Often times, they help the client think outside the box and discover new and more efficient ways of setting and achieving goals. After helping their client identify and set their life goals, the life coach works to help put into place the exact structures and support systems necessary to help their client achieve those goals. The life coach acts as both a support system and a cheerleader. They encourage their client and help them overcome life’s obstacles and assist them in breaking down the various steps toward achieving their goal. Smaller, more manageable steps toward success are easier to achieve and provide people with the encouragement and satisfaction that they need in order to keep up their momentum and achieve their dreams.
