The modern business world is not that different from many other aspects of the human condition. People go to a nondescript office five days a week, fighting ridiculous traffic, and spending time away from loved ones, just to be able to survive. People want what is best for the people they care about the most, so they will often slave away at a computer in order to provide for their families. The problems that are usually associated with modern business practices is that when people go overboard in service of their own self interests and forget that their actions have a real and quantifiable effect on other human beings. For example, when an assets management firm acquires a struggling firm, only to fire half the employees and liquidate a majority of the assets in order to make it profitable just so they can turn around and sell it in anywhere from six to nine months time, they sometimes forget that those people that they put out of work have families. And those families have to eat, and get health care services, and occasionally go out on the town for a fun time, just to relieve the everyday stresses that come from living in the modern world. But without the appropriate funds to bankroll said activities, what is a struggling working class, lower middle class, or lower income family supposed to do? Many people, when faced with tough choices, elect to cut spending, others choose to forgo important services, hoping that it will provide the smallest amount of relief, so that they will be able to provide just the basics so that their loved ones will get what they need, and will be able to live in accordance with what is expected of the first world.
In these tough times, businesses are equally as susceptible to the poor economy just as individuals are. Companies want to avoid closing up shop, just like people want to avoid foreclosing on their homes so they do not have to live on the street, begging for change just to get a sandwich. Thus, many companies have started spending a considerable portion of their available funds on public relations companies. The reason behind this somewhat surprising move is that public relations companies can help businesses retain old customers and get new ones by advancing their reputations in the public sphere. By controlling how the average person on the street, who might be in financial trouble him or herself, public relations companies can offer businesses a way to present themselves to the public that will result in a sterling reputation. No other company can provide this service, which is why so many firms in every imaginable industry, like the automotive and manufacturing industries, have retained public relations companies to help them fight back against a piss poor economy.
One of the major tenets of the strategies that public relations companies put in to place is that they have to realize that people are struggling. They can’t go about business as usual, thinking that every single in the world is just fine and dandy, and that everything is coming up roses for every single person on the planet. Public relations companies have to realize that how they present themselves will have an effect in how poor individuals view them. If they think long and hard about this fact, they will be able to present a more cohesive vision that will paint them in a positive light.
