The Chase No matter what the breed, it is in a dog's nature to pursue moving objects. Whether cars, people or other animals, you dog will be tempted give chase. You can end up with a not so happy ending if a chase occurs and ends badly. While you may not be able to take the instinct out of the dog, there are thing you can do to keep your pet safer. Stopping the chase by a puppy prior to it beginning could be your best method to alter its behavior. If you can train your dog to pay attention to you and your voice before taking off after something, it will help. Leaping and Jumping A puppy will jump up to signal a greeting to its mother. Once they get used to doing this, they will also do it to your guests. Dominant behavior may also be exhibited by the puppy jumping up once it becomes a grown dog. Jumping can be troublesome and dangerous behavior. All training will not succeed, but there are effective techniques that may be taught to discourage jumping. Some methods are better than others, as grabbing at a dog's paws or pushing them down may backfire and cause bad behavior. In general, to acknowledge your dog's behavior in any way is seen by the animal as a reward so you may be reinforcing the unwanted behavior without knowing it. Pay no attention to your puppy and turn away is the best technique to use in training. Be careful not to speak, touch or make eye contact with the dog. Continue doing what you were doing. Only return your attention to the dog when he has calmed down. Your puppy's problem behavior may subside when he understands your actions. Biting In born problem behavior by your dog can be seen in dog bites that may be attributed to instinct. To learn their place in their pact and environment, puppies tend to nip and bite a bit in order to explore. It is important to teach the puppy right away that you will not tolerate any biting or mouthing. Many people believe that biting is dependent on the breed of dog you are dealing with but this isn't necessarily true. Breeding choices, socialization, and proper training are the best ways to reduce the possibility of any breed of dog to bite and this must be taught by the breeders and masters with the individual dog. A Potential Problem Behavior is Aggression You will know if your dog is being aggressive if he bits, lunges, growls, or shows their teeth. The history of your dog or his breed doesn't matter when you begin to see signs of aggression. If the dogs parents were aggressive or if your dog was brought up in a home that was abusive, you can be sure that he will begin to show the aggressive side of his own personality. It is no laughing matter if your dog is aggressive or showing signs of potential aggression. A dog who is generally aggressive or irritable may be reacting to a health condition. A trip to the vet can easily determine if your dog has an underlying condition that could be causing the behavior. A good animal trainer could be the right answer for the bad behavior that your dog exhibits. If you have an aggressive dog, your main concern should be keeping yourself and others safe.
