When Lord Arumuga grew up, Lord Shiva asked him to ruin Surapadma and free the Devas from their vicious bondage. Lord Murugan passed on Tiruchendur with his Brobdingnagian army and camped. He directed his lieutenant, Veerabahu to the asuras as an emissary and asked Surapadma to free the Devas. Since Surapadma turned down the asking, warfare resulted.
