I was sitting on the beach and thinking about what really matters in life? I have no doubt that I am not alone in these thoughts, but what does really matter?
Relationships, family, friends, neighbors, co-workers and other people that are strangers to us…n nor possessions?
Why do so many of us spend so much of our precious time on earth in the pursuit of possessions and the money required to maintain these possessions? And investing our time in rushing around for these possessions?
Why aren’t we spending as much of our precious time on earth as possible in pursuit of creating love and support for other people? Spending time with them, calling them, writing to them, doing things for them, smiling at them? Showing them that they matter?
How far off base have we gone as a whole?
There are essentially 3 types of possessions:
1. Necessities – food, clothing, and shelter…things to keep us warm, clean, healthy and fed
2. Prized items – what 3 things would you take with you from your home if you had 5 minutes to do so before disaster struck?
3. The rest of it
Are you spending too much time working to pay for possessions or too much time maintaining them? Are your family, friends, and everyone in your life (neighbors, the person you pass on the street) getting the best of you that you can give?
I am not suggesting that you throw everything you own out and live in a hut. I am also not suggesting that you stop taking care of your things so that they fall into disrepair. What I am asking you to do is consider the true value of the objects that you own…and how hard you work to obtain them…and if you could live without them…and if you should…and to consider the value of people in your life…and if you could live without them.
Find meaning in your life.
Don’t wait for a disaster. Really, don’t wait.
And a clue…those possessions…they are not the reason you are here on earth.
YOU have a much GREATER PURPOSE!
