We've All Been There, Done That Staying on task in order to get things done is an important part of growing your business. As the leader of your pack you must learn to overcome procrastination so that your team can follow in your footsteps and be highly productive on your behalf at all times. One of the most common causes of procrastination comes from disliking a task in particular. A chronic procrastinator puts every task they don't want to do on the back burner. Other procrastinators have what we call "decisional procrastination," and they avoid making decisions until they are absolutely forced into making one. Then there are the business owners who procrastinate when they are in "information overload". Oh, and some people procrastinate because they are easily swayed by shiny objects, so their original project or task never gets completed because they're always on to the next thing. Do you see yourself in any of these descriptions? Can Procrastination Be Cured? There is no quick fix for procrastination. You can, however, lessen the number of times procrastination gets in your way by narrowing your focus. Sometimes looking at the bigger picture can be overwhelming. Taking a project or task and then breaking it down into baby steps can alleviate the feelings of overwhelm and allow you to focus on one small step at a time. Another way to avoid the procrastination trap is to reward yourself once you meet a goal. Once you associate the completion of a task with something positive, you'll be less likely to avoid procrastinating in a similar situation in the future. Remain Accountable If you find that you let yourself slide on commitments or tell yourself that it's okay to do a task tomorrow ... and tomorrow inevitably turns into next week, you might need an accountability partner. Are you ready to overcome procrastination so that you can meet your goals and build your business? Good! Ask someone you can trust to hold you accountable. You deserve that support and accountability. And so do your business goals! Gain Momentum Starting a task is often the hardest part. Once you get past that starting point, the likelihood that you will keep working until you finish is quite high. So keep this in mind: A task in motion usually stays in motion. In order to build some momentum when you're really in procrastination mode, try beginning with the easiest task on your list. Don't try to tackle the biggest or most time-consuming task when you aren't feeling motivated. Instead, choose an easy task, eliminate all distractions you have at hand, and set yourself up for success. Complete that easy task and then keep going. Let your momentum build. Keep your goals in sight and steer yourself toward the finish line. You know how good it will feel to reach it! So go for it and be sure to reward yourself for overcoming your procrastination.
