Quirks that Work

It used to be that “quirky” was NOT a good thing to be. You might be “cool, daddy-o,” “groovy,” “far out,” “outta sight,” or “gnarly” – but please, no quirks!

That is wrong on so many levels.

Our quirks – the things that make us unique – are what make us interesting. They are what make people want to get to know us better.

The same goes for businesses. The businesses with “spunk” – the ones that have unique, memorable traits – succeed. “Bizzspeak” would term that a company’s brand.

In working with people who are building their national brands, I tell them to search for their quirks. Find what is unique enough about you that your customers and the media will sit up and take notice.

Think about it. If you were at a party, who would you find intriguing – a man in a grey flannel suit, or a guy in a 70s-era lime green leisure suit? Well, that would probably depend on your personality. I would talk to the lime green guy. But that’s just me.

The point it, you have to match the quirk – the brand – to the right audience. That’s how you draw people to you, and how you capture their imaginations.

So, I encourage you to unleash your inner quirk, and go for it. You will be surprised at how memorable that will make your brand!
