We have all heard about the harmful effects of smoking and know that it turns into an obsession for millions of people. Reports have found that some people are forced to make several attempts at giving up this terrible addiction and while some are successful, others find it a tough uphill battle to quit and find their backs up against the wall. Smoking can have a negative effect on several body functions and our lungs are the ones that suffer the most from this addiction. Some people require specific treatment to restore vital organ functions and overall health after they have given up smoking. The good news is that our bodies will start to work to repair damage as soon as we give up smoking. Studies have been conducted and it is a proven fact that our heart rate will decrease within 20 minutes of smoking our last cigarette. Most of our lung functions will start to see improvement within three months. Even though the natural healing process will take some time, there are certain things that we can do on our own to help it out and restore our lost health. Make sure that you include plenty of fresh fruits and vegetables in your daily diet. By doing this, you will speed up the healing process in your lungs because they are low on fat content and rich in anti-oxidants. They will also help you to maintain good lung functions and keep them working properly. Drinking plenty of water will also help the healing process in your lungs. You should drink at least 8 to 10 glasses a day. When you leave the house and go outside, take a water bottle with you so your body will stay well hydrated when you are away from your home. A well hydrated body leads to good health. Another way that you can help to heal your lungs is to incorporate some sort of physical exercise into your daily life. This has been proven to help repair the lung’s function after you have quit smoking and it also repairs the cells in your lungs that have done the damage to them. It is advised that you should try to workout 3 or 4 times a week to help speed up the healing process, but be careful that you do not overwork your body as that could result in other health problems. While exercise is one of the most important steps in the healing process of the lungs, breathing exercises are another important piece of the puzzle. These exercises will help you to strengthen your lungs and will also make your breathing much easier. Breathing exercises are also an excellent way to reduce stress in your life and as you know, we all have to deal with it at some point in our lives. Most smokers tend to light up a cigarette when they are in a stressful situation, so by reducing stress , it will help to curb the addiction. One of the best things about quitting smoking is that you will reduce your chances for developing lung cancer. Make sure that after you quit, you make an appointment with your doctor and have a checkup as he or she can provide you with valuable information on how to take care and maintain your body and lungs so you can live life to the fullest.
