Lord Rama’s name was given to him by Sage Vasishta who was the preceptor and advisor of the Raghu dynasty. His name is so powerful and it has a significant meaning as it’s composed of two ‘beeja aksharas’ namely the Agni Bheeja (Ra) and the Amrita Bheeja (Ma). Agni Bheeja vitalises his body and mind while the Amrita Bheeja rejuvenates him from fatigue. He was the perfect human being. He was the great protector of all his people. His reputation and bravery were unlimited. He lived as an ideal son, brother, husband and king. Lord Rama ruled in Ayodhya for eleven thousand years. Rama Navami Puja ProcedurernRama Navami is a festival of nine days. It’s also known as ‘Chaitra Navaratri’ or ‘Sri Rama Navratri’. Rama Navami Festival celebrations starts with the offering of prayers to the Sun to seek the blessings from the supreme power as people consider the sun as predecessor of Lord Rama. Devotees of Lord Rama spend this day by singing devotional songs, chanting mantras of Lord Rama and observe fasting for the whole day. It is also known as the ‘Rama Navami Vrat’. There are no steadfast principles to keep the fast. If you want to keep ‘Nirahar Vrat’ (fasting), you should not be eating or drinking anything till you break your fast. You can also keep the vrat without having such a strict rule. You can have boiled vegetables without any flavors and also have coffee, tea, curd, fruits and vegetables. At the end of the day, a devotee breaks his fast after having fruits and sweets. This holy fast gives ultimate salvation to a person. An idol of Lord Rama is adorned with flowers, vermilion, sandal paste, turmeric paste and an oil lamp is lit before it. Chanting the holy mantras of Sri Rama like ‘Om Sri Ramaya Namah’ or ‘Om Sri Ram Jai Ram Jai Jai Ram’ on the great day of Rama Navami is very auspicious. Generally people like to have a holy bath in the river Sarayu of Ayodhya which is also a part of the elaborate rituals of the ceremony. It is believed that people who take bath in river Sarayu on the day of Rama Navami will get relief from all sins and negative forces. In South India, Lord Rama and Mother Sita’s wedding ceremonies are performed by priests.
