Random Acts Of Peace

The forces of nature have caused immense destruction over the past twelve months. A tsunami devastated huge parts of S.E. Asia; hurricanes and subsequent floods inundated New Orleans, and most recently an earthquake wrecked people’s lives in Pakistan.

We may look for meaning in such events or regard them as random occurrences. Perhaps they are simply reminders that the earth is in a constant state of flux. We live in the midst of a miraculous combination of natural phenomena, which mostly sustains us and sometimes can destroy us.

In the face of natural devastation, we humans have the capacity to care for each other, as witnessed through the outpouring of donations and practical help and in the stories of individual acts of supreme kindness.

How immeasurably sad it is, therefore, that war, terrorism, and other acts of violence continue to scar our world, committed by people who lack a sense of inner peace. I was recently involved in a peace conference with the theme of The Art of Peace Leadership. One of the ideas that emerged was for each of us present to commit some “random acts of peace.” My contribution is the publication of my latest book “Recipes for Inner Peace.” Not so random perhaps, until people start to hand out the book to friends, family, clients, employees and acquaintances.

My firm belief is that, when we have the tools (or the recipes) for our own inner peace, we can and will deal with others in a peaceful way and will also handle any of life’s catastrophes in as positive and creative a way as possible.

The earth will continue to offer both life and destruction as it moves through its changes. Let us humans learn peace within so that we can live in peace with each other. Commit a random act of peace today. It starts with you.
