The recruiting process is very complex and is not as simple as a recruiter receiving your resume and you hope to get a job interview the next day. There is so much more that is involved from you sending in your resume to you getting a job offer. We want to explain the recruiting process to you at a high level, so that you may get some visibility into the hiring process. Also, remember that knowledge is power and the more that you know about this process; the better this information will serve your purposes. Now, let us talk about the hiring process. Each company has their own unique way of bringing a candidate onboard into their company but these 6 major steps are the common function that each organization must perform:
1. Determine that there is a need to staff a position. An example would be if a consulting company is providing services to their client and they are lacking the resources to support the work then they may get permission from their client to hire a person to provide these specific services.
2. Develop the requirements for the position. After the need for the position has been established then the hiring manager would need to gather the job requirements from the client to make sure that the criteria for the position have been captured. The hiring manager would also work with the recruiter on the job title, job description, and salary range for the position. There is a lot of back and forth in what goes into the job description and there are usually more people who are involved in this process.
3. Open a Job Requisition. Now that we have captured the requirements of the position on paper, the company would need to advertise to the world that they need to hire someone for their position. The recruiter would then open up a job requisition on their corporate job board and in other places such as LinkedIn, and Monster.
4. Let the Recruiting Process begin. This is when the recruiter really earns their money when candidates start applying for the position and the recruiter would need to start screening the resumes. A lot of times, if the requirements for the position are difficult to find a candidate for then the corporate recruiter would need to reach out to their vendors to receive any candidates that they may have that may meet the qualifications for the position. Once the candidates for the position have been identified then they go through the interview process.
5. Interview Process. We all know about the interview process. Hiring managers and interviewers are looking at resumes and are super excited in talking with the candidate. When the hiring company calls you in for an interview it is because they saw something special in your profile. The people who are performing the interview want to make sure that you can do the job that you fit into the culture of the organization and that they would be able to work well with you.
6. Selection Process. Now the company would select the best candidate for the position. The company may not get the person that they wanted originally because of competing factors such as salary, availability, and other competing offers but they will get a great candidate that would fit their position requirements.
