Humans have a new mission, they have to make the Earth a greener and more sustainable place. Lately people have realised that they have to start fighting some issues that affect the environment. The first thing they can do is change the way they use things and resources in their houses. Every state has a waste management program that teaches people how they have to act if they want to improve the living conditions. Numerous things can be reused, but people are not used to doing it, and this is one of the main factors that lead to waste. More and more cities ban plastic bags, because they are aware that they are some of the most harmful waste people can spread in nature. A great initiative is to teach people to reuse the items they have around the house, and repurpose them. Re-using certain items means that you also save money, because you do not have to buy new things.
Reuse the cans, containers and jars
There is nothing easier than recycling the items made from metal and glass. But, you can also recuse the items made from these two materials, because they can serve multiple purposes. If you have glass jars then you can use them to store pantry items. When it comes to coffee canisters, they can be used to organise the desk accessories, because they would look amazing on both a woman and man’s desk. If you are a coffee lover, there is no better way to show your passion for this drink, than reusing the canisters for multiple purposes. The jars and cans can be great storage accessories for preserving food. In case you have items with a narrow neck, you can use them as flower supports. Also, they can serve as drinking glasses, and you can create sets with different models of jars. If you have bottles, you can use them for decorative purposes, because they can be painted and customised to be displayed on shelves.
Paper bags, magazines and newspapers
People have the misconception that they cannot repurpose the paper, if they want to help the environment all they can do is to recycle it. But you can find new uses to paper at home. If you will check online, you will notice that there are guidelines on how you can create trays and baskets from newspapers and magazines. You can transform this into your DIY project. You should first recycle paper, put in one box all the magazines, newspapers, and grocery bags you have. When you think that there is enough paper, you can start creating new things. In case you are passionate about gardening, you can use paper to create compostable seed pots.
Bedding, towels and clothes
When you consider that a certain clothing item is worn and torn, you prefer to throw it to garbage. You can repurpose them, if you cut them and you transform them into cleaning rags. Also, if you cut them into strips, you can check a tutorial on how to weave them and transform them into floor carpets. Braided rugs look amazing, no matter what type of style you prefer, when it comes to decorating your house. If you have sewing skills this is the best way to reuse the old clothes.
If your clothes do not fit you any longer or if you do not like them, because they do not suit your style anymore, you can donate them to people who do not afford to buy new clothes.
Seeds
When you buy vegetables and fruits from the market, you throw the seeds away, because you think that you cannot use them to prepare food. This is true, but you can use the seeds to grow vegetables. You should collect the seeds, and when the time comes, you can plant them in pots or even into the garden.
Metal furniture
If you plant to change the furniture in the near future, you may want to replace the metal items with new ones, but you should know that you can reuse them. It is true that it is not very easy to refinish metal, but you can do it, you only need some guidance and the right products. And where you count that metal furniture lasts in time, so if you properly care for them, you will not have to worry. In case you want to get rid of the metal furniture, you can sell it, give it to someone else or take it to a centre specialised in scrap metal recycling. It is important to recycle metal when you cannot reuse or repurpose it. If you take the metal to a recycling centre, you will receive money for it, so it is worth to make the effort.
Toys
When children grow, people want to dispose of their toys, because they cannot find them a use. And if you have more than one children, then your house may be filled with them, so it is understandable that you want to take them out as soon as possible. One option is to organise a yard sale. But if you want to help your community, then you can donate them. You should get rid only of the toys that can no longer be used, because they are broken.
Light bulbs
You can find a new purpose to light bulbs, you only need some inspiration. When a light bulb burns, people dispose of it. In case you want to do it, you should take them to the recycling point from your area. You should know that it is important the light bulbs to be recycled at a professional centre because they contain mercury. Every city has a centre that handles the light bulbs in safety conditions, so there is no reason to throw them to garbage. If you want to reduce the damage to the environment, you can replace the standard light bulbs with LED ones. They last for a longer period, compared with the standard ones, and they burn more efficiently.
Also, you can paint them in multiple colours and hang them in the garden if you want to repurpose them.
