Sometimes the simplest solutions are best. Awnings were first used in ancient Syrian and Egyptian civilizations. The earliest known examples were little more than woven mats that were used to provide shade from the scorching desert sun in the marketplace or at home. More impressive awnings were designed for huge structures, including the Roman Colosseum, which had an awning known as the velarium that could shade around one-third of the entire arena.

In the modern era, folks are so obsessed with renewable sources of energy, that they often forget that saving energy is half the battle. Depending on where you live and the fabric and type of awning you put in, the average window awning can reduce your overall energy costs by as much as one-third! How is this possible?

Increases in energy cost are generally the result of heat gain or heat loss. Heat loss is often caused by inadequate insulation, while heat gain is caused by solar radiation. In other words, the hot summer sun shines directly on your windows, heats them up, and increases the temperature on the inside due to heat transfer. As a result, you must crank up the air conditioning and spend more money on energy during the warmer months.

Awnings are green!

No matter where you stand on the whole global warming debate, the numbers don’t lie. With an average temperature of 55.2 degrees Fahrenheit, 2012 was the hottest year ever in the U.S! As a result, energy cost spiked and people are paying more than they should cool their homes and apartments. Not surprisingly, awnings are enjoying renewed popularity.

The benefits

In addition to blocking the sun in the warmer months, awnings can also protect your home or business from inclement weather during the winter. Retractable awnings are the most popular type because they are better suited to regions that experience seasonal weather. Larger awning can also help homeowners expand their living space by shielding decks and patios from the sun when the mercury rises. Last but not least, awning can be used to advertise your business and may increase foot traffic and walk-in sales.

Types

There is no doubt that all types of awning can help home and business owners save money by reducing energy consumption. But that doesn’t mean any old awning will serve your needs. With that in mind, let us take a moment to discuss the most popular awnings available today.

Retractable

Easily the most requested type, retractable awnings help provide seasonal protection from the elements. They can be rolled up or retracted with either a hand-crank or an electric motor when not in use. This generally gives them a longer lifespan than permanent awnings.

Aluminum

Fancier awnings that enhance outdoor décor and increase curb appeal are generally made of aluminum. They are usually enameled and sold in a wide variety of colors, sizes, and styles. Aluminum awnings do not roll up, but they are often tough enough to survive severe weather.

Marine Canvas

Sold in both permanent and retractable styles, canvas awnings can be used to keep small and large spaces cool during the summer months. They are durable, colorful, and generally quite affordable.
