Relief from back pain comes with different approaches. It is depending on its severity and duration of pain that the relief can be given. When one feels that their back is really disturbing them, they usually have pain relievers on hand or something a hot and cold application. The risk of self medication may be related to over dose or under dose of drugs. When the hot and cold application exceeds on its normal duration, there can be an adverse effect to one's health. As such, proper consultation from a health care provider should be done. Out of different factors back pain is felt, the very first thing to do is either to take a rest or withdraw self from straining activities for the mean time. You cannot proceed with your activities while back pain is being felt because the more you do it, the more pain you get. On the first dew days of back pain, rest is the best relief, but on the succeeding days, back pain has to be treated more than rest because if rest exceeds for more than 2-3 days, it can aggravate the situation. Thus, a high form of treatment can be done to allow successful restoration of the back and to help the patient to be back pain-free. The relief may be in a form of exercise, medication, and ergonomic back supports. PHARMACOLOGICAL TREATMENT The most common medications for back pain are the over the counter pain killers and non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drugs (NSAIDs). These are highly recommended to alleviate back pain. Since the indicated drugs have its own different functions, they can be taken at the same time. Also, there are drugs prescribed for prolong relief of back pain, and they are anti-depressants and muscle relaxants. Analgesics: Acetaminophen (Tylenol) – This is the single most effective non prescription drugs for lower back pain and it has fewer side effects. It relieves pain by working its action into the brain to turn off the pain perception. NSAIDs: Aspirin - Inflammation is the target problem of this drug and it is effective. However, aspirin is not usually taken because of its life threatening effects; other NSAIDs are ibuprofen and naproxen. Ordered steroids: The steroids are effective in treating the swelling for long-term; however, adverse effects of the drugs must be monitored so the dose must be exact and should be given regularly. To ensure safety, before taking the drugs, ask first form your doctor the dose, frequency and duration of the drugs. RELIEVING EXERCISES FOR BACK PAIN The exercise will help restore the back (spine) and eventually reduce pain when done right, gradual and in a progressive manner. They can possibly distribute nutrients for the spine as well to its surrounding muscles, soft tissues, ligaments and joints. A relief from back pain through a regular routine of lower back exercises helps patients avoid stiffness and weakness, thus minimizing recurrences of lower back pain. These exercises are also important to be consulted by your therapist for proper instructions on using the correct form and technique. Before you will start with the exercises, isn't it important that you will be aware of the different muscles used? Hamstrings – This muscle is found on the back portion of the legs in order to help in proper posture when sitting and standing; buttocks muscles are also being supported by Hamstrings. Piriformis - located from the back of the femur (thigh bone) to the sacrum (the base of the spine). Gluteus muscles of the buttocks - This is responsible for supporting flexibility and motion of the hips. LET'S WORK OUT! Back exercises also involve the neck, back, buttocks and hips. HELPFUL EXERCISES FOR THE NECK Chin to Chest Whether you are standing or sitting, gently bend the head forward while bringing the chin toward the chest until a stretch is felt in the back of neck. Ear to Shoulder Assume a comfortable sitting or standing position and gently bend the neck to one side as if touching the ear to the shoulder until a stretch is felt in the side of the neck. Do it to the opposite side. SIMPLE BACK EXERCISES The exercises are purposively done to allow effective movement and flexibility. Back flexion Lie on your back with a mat; as you lie down, both knees must be moved towards the chest and your head moving forward to assume a fetal position. Knee to Chest While lying on your back, knees should be bent and both heels of the feet flat on the floor. Place hands at the back of your knee and then bring it towards the chest. SIMPLE EXERCISES FOR THE HIPS AND GLUTEUS Spinal movement and flexibility happen when stretching of the hips and buttocks are done. Hip exercise Stand with feet apart, then take minimum step back using your right foot and then bend left knee. As you do such position, bend more forward and try to reach the right leg so that outer hip stretch is attained. Piriformis muscle stretch When you lie on your back, cross the leg over the other and then gently pull one knee to the chest for a good stretch on the buttocks area. EQUIPMENT for the back!
