There are many different reasons for relocation after divorce, and some of the factors that come into the picture include being close to a support system. For instance, a wife who is emotional over the collapse of her marriage may feel comfort being close to her own parents, sisters, brothers or other family members. While this may not be the most ideal situation when there are children involved, relocation after divorce often allows the custodial parent to maintain some emotional stability and thus provide the nurturing the children need to adjust to the loss of the non-custodial parent from the home. rnHaving a support system is important following divorce, and sometime having the support system means one of the parties must relocate. This relocation after divorce doesn't always mean an out of town move; sometimes it just means one of the parties to the divorce leaves the general area in order to begin a new life. Divorce is very traumatic for everyone involved, so if there is a need for a support system, the parties must agree to do what is best for the children and even the parties themselves. There are several reasons the parties may require a support system: • The marriage ended under extenuating circumstances such as adultery or physical or mental abuse. • One of the parties to the divorce decided "suddenly" he or she no longer wanted to be married. • Financial circumstances led to a breakdown in communications and ultimate end to the marriage. • One of the parties suffered some traumatic event/events that prevented him or her from being the spouse they once were. • Health issues with other family members or the childrenrnAnother problem that may develop with couples that decide that relocation following divorce is a viable option is when the non-custodial parent has to relocate because of his or her job. Sometimes the emotional strain on the children is too much, so the custodial parent chooses to move closer to the former spouse for the benefit of the children. While not everyone is able to cope with a situation of this magnitude, it is certainly a feasible one for those who are truly able to put the needs of their children before their own needs. rnThe decision you make regarding relocation after divorce should be the one that is best for you and your children. Certainly emotions and the need for a support system exist, but you want to look at both sides of the picture. Your lawyer can help you make the decision that is best and the one that is the least likely to cause conflict with your spouse. You also need to remember there are child custody and visitation issues that can be compounded when one spouse relocates, and if the children are close to the non-custodial parent, it can create several emotional trauma and stress. Do not make any decisions without consulting with your lawyer and maybe even someone who is experienced with the concept of relocation after divorce and its effects on the children.
