Having a beautiful smile is something that almost everyone wishes for. But while some people have naturally perfect teeth, others are certainly not so lucky. Despite the fact that some individuals may keep up with their oral health in the best ways possible, including brushing and flossing each day, the truth of the matter is that their teeth may shift out of place due to natural genetics. For those who have a crooked or misaligned smile, no matter how much they try and keep up with their oral health, the emotional frustration that can set in can be devastating. This can lead to people feeling self-conscious about their smile, leading to them not being able to be themselves when in social settings or situations. The good news is that these individuals are not out of luck. Instead, they can rely on a dental retainer as a way to help straight their teeth and give them the smile that they have always dream of. What Is A Dental Retainer? Many people believe that retainer is only needed by those who have had braces in their lifetime. And while this is certainly something to be considered, it’s not the only case. Instead, a dental retainer can be used by pretty much anyone who has misaligned or uneven teeth. rnYour teeth are naturally going to be creatures of habit. Therefore, that means that they may shift out of place naturally, no matter how much you do to try and prohibit this. Luckily, this is where a dental retainer comes into play. A dental retainer is a piece of equipment that the patient will put in their mouth in order to keep their teeth straight and in line. In some cases, a dental retainer can also be outfitted by an orthodontist to help push teeth into their corrective place. For those that have issues with misaligned or crooked teeth, a dental retainer can be the perfect way for them to finally have a straighter smile. Does A Dental Retainer Need To Be Worn At All Times? Whether or not a person needs to wear their dental retainer at all times will greatly depend on the severity of their oral health. In some cases, a dentist may suggest that their patient only wears the retainer at night, as this will be sufficient enough for them to keep their teeth in place during the day. However, there are plenty of people out there with teeth that have such a tendency of moving around, that their orthodontist may suggest that they continue wearing their retainer throughout the entire day. If a patient has to wear a retainer throughout the day, it is okay for them to take it out at certain points. For example, the orthodontist will likely allow the patient to take the retainer out while they are eating or brushing their teeth, in order to make sure that damage does not take place to the retainer in place. However, if the dentist recommends against removing the retainer for more than short periods of time, then it is highly advised that the patient keeps it in as often as possible. What Will Happen If A Dental Retainer Is Not Worn As Suggested? Wearing a retainer all of the time can be a bit frustrating and annoying. Many people will attest to the fact that a retainer will hinder the ability to speak properly, and it can even cause a bit of discomfort to the teeth and jaw. However, if a dentist recommends that the patient wears the retainer as often as possible, then it is important that they adhere to this advice. It may not be the most comfortable or relaxing feeling, but a dental retainer will be well worth it in the long run as the patient strives to have healthier and more stable teeth. There are few things that people can do to fight the genetics they were born with. In the event that someone is born with genetics that cause for troublesome teeth, then it is important to know that there are plenty of options to consider to fix these issues. With dental retainers, you can have a straighter and healthier looking smile that you will be happy with.
