The dental condition known as xerostomia is more commonly known as dry mouth, although there are other colloquial names that people use to refer to this impairment, such as cottonmouth and doughmouth. Xerostomia may not seem like a serious condition to most people, but, in reality, xerostomia can cause many other dental problems. The condition itself causes halitosis or bad breath, and can negatively affect the appearance of the mouth. Xerostomia is also sometimes associated with more serious oral ailments such as mouth cancer and other periodontal diseases. Aside from wreaking havoc on a person’s oral health, dry mouth can also affect the way a person interacts with others. People suffering from dry mouth may lose confidence in socializing with their peers, due to the bad odor their mouth emits. Smokers commonly experience dry mouth, because of the tobacco content of cigarettes and cigars. In the state of Illinois, two cities are experiencing advancements in the field of medicine, particularly dentistry. Dentists of the Illinoisan cities of Highland Park and Lake Forest are capable of diagnosing the causes of xerostomia as well as reversing the condition’s effects. These dentists’ expertise makes them valuable to communities in the two cities. According to a dentist in Lake Forest, experiencing dry mouth is common for many individuals, especially for people who have recently suffered from illnesses such as sinus infections and colds. However, when xerostomia persists, dental consultation is needed. Xerostomia can be caused by many factors, such as excessive breathing through the mouth, insufficient saliva production, and improper oral hygiene. Despite the many causes of xerostomia, treatments are available to remedy the effects of this condition. However, identification of the exact cause of the condition must be done by a dentist Highland Park, to determine the most suitable treatment. The treatment usually focuses on the condition’s effects, since the condition itself often cannot be corrected. Aside from treating xerostomia’s effects, dentists also perform cavity prevention procedures on patients. Dentists may perform prophylactic procedures on patients suffering from xerostomia. Prophylaxis is a term used by a dentist in Lake Forest to address the system of oral disease prevention. In these procedures, patients must learn habits that would promote appropriate dental hygiene such as brushing and flossing regularly and rinsing with mouthwash.
