The raw food diet for dogs has gathered many supporters. These supporters believe in the results they have seen in other dogs that use this diet. Even with the many supporters that are for this diet, the nonbelievers of the diet can't be ignored either. There are people that have concerns about the diet causing harm to dogs.
The raw food diet for dogs is not a cheap meal plan. This is a diet that is made up of muscle meats still attached to the bone, bones, different organ meats as well as veggies, fruits and dairy. When a pet owner decides to make the food at home, they have to include some combination of these ingredients. The foods that are used are human grade foods so as the cost of foods increase in the grocery store, so does the cost of the dog's diet. With multiple dogs, the cost of the raw food diet can quickly rival the cost of feeding the owners as well.
Preparing a raw food diet for dogs is time consuming. A passionate dog owner has to take the time to ensure they have all the components of the diet, put it together and serve it to the dog. Not only does it take time to prepare, the clean up after the meal takes time as well. The utensils used to prepare the food have to be disinfected because of the often bloody meat involved. Immediately after the dog has finished eating, it is best that the feeding area and bowls used be disinfected as well. If they aren't cleaned, the bacteria will grow and fester, causing illness to the dog and humans in the house.
There are those pet owners that want to start a raw food diet for dogs but they don't have time to prepare the foods for their pets. When there is a limited amount of time, they can go to their local pet supply store and purchase a prepared raw food diet. There are many pet stores that don't carry this type of food though. When carrying this food product, they have to pay for the refrigeration.
These pet owners are also concerned with the quality of the food they would be feeding their beloved animals. Because a raw food diet for dogs consists of human grade meats, they are concerned at the things that are done to human grade meat. These meats are exposed to antibiotics, hormones and different things that may be harmful to a dog if ingested. These toxins can have devastating effects and dog owners don't want to risk their animal's health.
Not all veterinarians are supportive of the raw food diet for dogs either. Some have stated this is a diet that can do a substantial amount of harm to a dog with a dog with a weak immune system. Because the food is raw, if there is a large amount of bacteria on the food and the dog eats it, it is at risk for a number of different illnesses. Veterinarians normally ask these dogs eat a specific diet that won't jeopardize their immune systems.
Dogs that have a compromised immune system aren't the only dogs vets don't want exposed to a raw food diet. Many actually recommend that puppies not be given this diet because of the needs they have as a growing animal. They are afraid that a raw food diet for dogs won't supply all the nutrients that a growing puppy will need. When all those nutrients aren't supplied, the puppy is put at risk for different deficiencies.
Even with the reported benefits of the raw food diet for dogs, there are reasons that people are concerned. There are supporters that believe that their dogs can eat this because this is the diet of their ancestors. Those that are against the diet feel that although the diet was fine for their ancestors, the many years of domestication has altered their digestive systems. With the differences in the digestive systems in dogs today, they fear the raw food diet does more harm than good in dogs of today. Before any pet owner switches diets, they should also ask their vet.
