Thousands of women across India are facing major fertility issues which could have been prevented by maintaining proper reproductive health. Dr. Sunita Tandulwadkar is a leading fertility expert in India who has helped hundreds of women conceive and bear healthy children. She heads the Ruby Hall Clinic, where every type of solution is available for couples who are not able to have children. However, most fertility issues can be avoided, when women know how to take care of their reproductive system. Here are few effective suggestions that can help women across India maintain their fertility and reproductive health.

Healthy Reproductive System

A healthy balanced diet and adequate exercises is the best way to maintain fitness and reproductive health. The second important thing is to screen sexually transmitted diseases (STD) in yourself and your partner at regular intervals. Many types of STDs do not produce any symptoms in a person and can be hard to detect without a test and that is why regular STD screening is advised. Have unprotected sex only when you are planning to conceive; otherwise, always use condoms or other types of contraceptives during intercourse to prevent unwanted pregnancies.

Tips for Maintaining Vaginal Health

In India, many women ignore genital hygiene. Genital hygiene not only improves sex life but also improves overall well being and health. Vagina naturally contains acids and beneficial bacteria for warding off infections and maintaining a healthy pH level. It also secretes a natural cleansing discharge. When there is any interference with these natural conditions, vagina may be infected.

Here are some tips to keep the vagina healthy -

• To avoid infections and bacterial build-up, keep the vaginal area clean that includes the vulva and labia. However, while washing do not use the usual soap and water combination, as that can wash off the protective acidic layer in the vagina and upset the natural pH balance. Use only vaginal wash products and make sure the wash has lactic acid. Alte
atively, a mixture of water and baking soda can be made at home which is also considered quite effective and safe.
• There is increased bacterial buildup after intercourse as the area will be damp and there will be remnant of discharge and semen which can increase the risk of infections. Therefore, it is very important to clean the vagina after intercourse.
• Take special care of vaginal hygiene during menstruation as the pH balance during periods may be disturbed. Change sanitary napkins frequently and wash the vaginal area with warm water during every change. Due to the increased dampness from the menstrual blood, there are more chances of getting an infection. When menstruation lasts for a longer period, the prolonged use of sanitary napkins can develop a rash, which could be difficult to deal with. Hence, try as much as possible to keep the vaginal area clean and dry.
• If you notice any symptoms such as excess or foul smelling discharge, consult a gynecologist immediately. Some experts recommend an annual visit to the gynecologist for a thorough checkup and for averting onset of various issues.
