If you are interested in serving your community, you can always go in for volunteering. You can donate to charitable causes too. However, a few of us think a step ahead and actually think of a career that's rewarding as well as helps you serve the community in the truest sense. Some of us strive to be Direct Support Professionals, helping people with different needs to complete their daily affairs and lead a normal and healthy life just like everyone else. If you are looking for both self-satisfaction and job satisfaction, you need to think about becoming a caregiver or a direct support professional. This job gives you the opportunity to serve mentally or physically challenged people. Life is not easy for the disabled. Being a DSP, you can surely make a difference in their life by helping them learn independent living skills through development training programs conducted by the state. However, not everyone can become a direct support professional as you need to meet some prerequisites like the following:
  • Should complete the age of 18 years or above
  • Should be able to demonstrate your communication skills in filling up forms and other reports of services provided to the participants
  • Have an attitude to follow written and oral instructions from the participants
  • Should be able to understand and communicate with the person, and ensuring a proper level of communication
  • Must complete training as per the referenced organizational policy, meeting state and federal regulatory requirement
  • Should have competency to handle the participants who may be physically or mentally disabled
Apart from these prerequisites to become a DSP you should also have some knowledge and skills to excel in this job as the following:
  • Awareness on participant supervision techniques
  • Knowledge in basic math and task analysis
  • Awareness on behavior modification
  • Knowledge about special populations
  • Understanding of production method
Along with these, it is also important that the DSP has some skill sets like assessing the participant, CPR and first aid skills, safe driving skills, conflict resolution skills and also good written and verbal communication. DSP's also need to produce reports and records pertaining to the development stages and activities of the participant. So by meeting the above criteria you can surely turn out to become a successful direct support professional to offer your services to disabled people and make a difference in their life. The satisfaction of helping people to improve their quality of life is very rewarding and often unmatched in another profession.
