Resident Evil 4 Separate Ways And Assignment Ada

Besides Mercenaries, I also like Separate Ways and Assignment Ada in Resident Evil 4. While the former is an intense testing of all 5 characters’ skills and weaponry against numerous enemies with limited time, the latter two are more like the main game. Only this time, they are related from Ada Wong’s perspective.

Ada is a secret agent working for Albert Wesker – Chairman of Umbrella Corporation and one of the masterminds behind the T-virus breakout. To me, she is more like a female version of 007 James Bond working for MI6 and Nikita.

Her trademark weapons are semi-automatic rifle, machine pistol and Punisher – a quick firing handgun that can despatch 7 bullets with one trigger.

Separate Ways is related at the same time as Resident Evil main game. Before Leon arrives at the main village, Ada is already there. Her mission is to retrieve a sample of Las Plagas – which was the newest and same virus responsible for turning the villagers violent.

But when Leon has problems coping with the villagers who attacked him in hordes, Ada rushes to the church and ring the bell. The bell instantly gives the villagers the assumption that it is a command signal from their Los Illuminados cult leader Osmund Saddler and they leave Leon alone to head for the church.

Based on her communications with Wesker who is operating behind the scenes throughout the game, her first priority is to find a local Spanard called Luis Sera whom Albert concludes having the sample. Because of that, Albert orders her to protect him at all costs until she got the sample.

However Leon gets to meet Luis first who was already held captive in an abandoned hut. Their meeting was interrupted by the arrival of several villagers and their head who captured them again.

When Ada finally meets Luis for the first and last time, Luis denies having the sample and assures her that he will do his best to get it for her. The next time she meets him, Luis is killed by Saddler shortly after giving Leon the sample.

Knowing the sample is now with Leon, she offers to give him a ride to the military base island where Ashley is kidnapped for the third time and held captive there. She could have got the sample then but chose to let Leon save Ashley first before fulfilling her objective.

But Wesker is not as patient and compassionate. Instead he sent Jack Krauser – Leon’s ex-military comrade and mastermind behind Ashley’s kidnap when he betrayed the US government and pledged his allegiance to Los Illuminados.

On the surface Ada and Jack appear to be working together as partners but in truth Jack intends to kill Ada and send her body to Wesker after dealing with Leon.

Ada’s next encounter with Krauser is when the latter is badly wounded but not killed by Leon. Ada manages to overcome him barely despite Krauser still having an edge with his Las Plagas infected arm which elongates into a deadly blade.

She then proceeds to distract Saddler so that Leon can rescue and get Ashley out of the experimental chamber. But in doing so, she ends up being captured when she underestimates Saddler and gets the sample.

She is rescued by Leon in return before the latter’s final battle with Saddler who has now transformed into a giant mutant with large multi razor-bladed limbs. She then returns the favour by locating the red rocket launcher – the only weapon capable of killing Saddler with one blast – and hurling it to Leon.

After Saddler is dismantled by the explosions, Ada finally reveals her true intents by threatening to shoot Leon if he refuses to handle over the sample. Despite Leon’s persistant questioning and warning about the virus, Ada still refuses to reveal her primary objective other than the fact that she is working with Wesker which Leon already knows before their encounter.

The mission ends with her in the chopper and putting the virus into a mini metal casing with automatic built-in locker.

In Assignment Ada, her mission is to retrieve not one but five Las Plagas samples. The whole game is played in the military base island where she squares off with the ravage infected commandos and their sub-bosses JJ with gatling guns. Her final opponent is Krauser who holds the final sample.

I not only like both games but the start and end music as well. I must also say in terms of speed and weaponry, Ada certainly has a cutting edge over Leon.
