The resolution of a web page is very important. It affects how we view the website. Uncomfortable viewing means fewer clients. Fewer clients translate into lower revenues. We will discuss computer monitor resolutions in the following paragraphs.

The first thing to understand when discussing this topic is that there is no optimal resolution for a website. It is impossible to design a website that appears identical in every browser operating in the computing world. Some experts suggest designing pages for the lowest resolution 640 x 480; some suggest for the most widely used 800 x 600 and a few experts go to the length of suggesting designs for 1280 x 1024 or 1024 x 768. Remember that it is not possible to make everybody happy at the same time.

Technology advances quickly. People change their computing devices over a period of time. If you are designing websites that are to be displayed in older computers, use the 640 x 480. This holds true for laptops with smaller screens.

A number of experts recommend designing websites around the 800 x 600 resolution. Before implementing the design parameters, it is advisable to analyze the statistics obtained by your browser to determine the resolution majority of your customers use in their computing devices.

Computer screens are getting larger with technological advancement. Screen size of 1024 x 768 has now become very popular. But, keep in mind that smaller screens are incapable of displaying web pages designed for this resolution. There are larger resolutions of 1280 x 1024 and more. These are found in high end, expensive computers and laptops.

According to popular industry opinion, optimise the web page for the 1024 x 768 resolution. It is the most widely used screen size in the computing world. Web designers should take cognizance of three criteria when a page layout is being optimised. First point of contention is the initial visibility of the web page. It means whether all important information of a web page can be seen at a glance or not. The issue of scrolling horizontally or vertically comes in this regard. The readability of a web page is another factor. The ease of reading the text is a vital factor. The aesthetics of the web page is also an important factor. The appearance and the correct positioning of the elements play a vital role.

Scrolling should be a key consideration in website design. Generally, users do not like to scroll. If there is too much scrolling on the website, then copy material should be reduced. Scrolling is dependent on screen size. Larger screens require less scrolling. Most Sydney website design firms optimise their websites for the 1024 x 768 resolution.
