The responsibilities of a marketing director can differ heavily based on the specific needs of the company although the basic responsibilities of every marketing director are generally the same. Marketing directors generally concern themselves with market segments, creating and executing a clearly defined marketing plan. This field is based on engaging customers to purchase products or make use of services offered by the company.

Marketing directors are put in charge of managing the company’s entire marketing plan, which can ultimately determine the success or failure of the company. The marketing director is responsible for creating a brand and making it recognizable by the targeted audience. Marketing directors may work alone or within a marketing group. They must be able to spot trends, and be the first to act on them. They also must stay up to date with news and new developments that may affect the company’s product or service. Marketing directors must communicate well, promote sales of the company’s product or service, and promote excellent customer service. Marketing directors must be able to maintain a positive mindset, and promote teamwork and a joint effort within the company. Marketing directors are generally responsible for sharing division goals and results with the employees, suggesting tips for improvement, and must efficiently delegate the workload. Market directors will be responsible in training new division employees and sharing new product knowledge with employees.

A marketing director may also be responsible for advertisements and mailings sent to their customers. Marketing directors are responsible for creating a positive image for the company and they must maintain it. Marketing directors must be up to date on current events and movements within the marketplace and they must react quickly to change. Marketing directors must demonstrate an expertise in supervising many employees at once and they must have the ability to communicate to these employees in an efficient manor both verbally and written. They must be detail-oriented and express the ability to complete projects from start to finish. Marketing directors must also be self-motivated with the urge to learn, as their profession is ever changing and growing.

Typically marketing directors hold a minimum of a master’s degree in business administration with a focus on marketing. It is preferred that you have many years in previous marketing experience to be accepted as a marketing director within most companies. The median salary is estimated at $138,000 per year. Marketing directors frequently have a long and unpredictable work schedule. Marketing directors are usually faced with a lot of stress and have to deal with problems branching from other units of the company.
