Rezulin is an oral anti hyperglycemic drug. It contains Troglitazone as its main active ingredient. Rezulin is used for management of type II diabetes or Diabetes mellitus. It is non-insulin dependant type of diabetes. Rezulin decreases insulin resistance. It makes muscles and adipose tissues more responsive to insulin. It helps to improve body respond to insulin. It controls blood sugar level by reducing sugar produced in liver. Troglitazone has been withdrawn from the U.S. market in 2000.

Side Effects of Rezulin

Use of Rezulin could yield many side effects. Some of them serious one and could lead to fatal results. Its most severe side effect is liver damage including liver failure.

Severe Side effects of Rezulin

Rezulin could produce following severe side effects. In case of occurrence of any of these side effects, immediately call your doctor, as they could prove fatal.

Use of Rezulin could cause severe liver toxicity. Patient may even need liver transplant if toxity result in liver failure. Some patients may even die.
If used with other hypoglycemic agents such as insulin, it could cause endocrine side effects including hypoglycemia.
It could also cause decreases in hemoglobin, hematocrit, and neutrophil counts. These happen due to an increase in plasma volume.
It could also cause changes in lipid levels.
There are no symptoms of Rezulin liver damage in the early stages. If you have any persistent weakness, fatigue, poor appetite, vomiting, jaundice, nausea, abdominal pain or any such symptoms, immediately call your doctor, as it may be a sign of liver damage.
It could also cause liver cirrhosis. In this condition scar tissues replaces normal tissues in the liver symptoms of cirrhosis are fatigue, nausea, exhaustion, loss of appetite, weakness and weight loss.
It could also cause itching on the skin. It is due to bile products deposited into the skin.
It could also cause edema.
Its use could lead to Jaundice.
It could also cause bruising and bleeding due to stoppage of production of the proteins needed for blood clotting in the liver.
It could lead to development of gallstones.
Its use could also lead to Portal hypertension.
It could lead to toxity in the blood. It could result in dull mental functioning, personality changes, coma or death.
As a side effect of Rezulin some patients may develop sensitivity to different medicines.
It could lead to enlargement of blood vessel and make them unable to carry blood and prone to bursting.
Rezulin side effects may cause heart problems too. It could also aggravate existing heart problems.
Shrinking of testicles or male breast enlargement could also take place due to side effect of this drug.
It could lead to coughing up or vomiting large amounts of blood.
