Rimonabant, a drug originally patented by pharmaceutical giant Sanofi-Aventis has emerged in mid-2006 as one of the most promising agents in the fight against obesity. In Brazil, became the subject of cover in one of the largest circulation magazines. The drug, marketed under the trade names of Acomplia, Zimult, Redufast was released here and in over 50 countries in 2007, but the ANVISA, such as the FDA suspended its sale in 2008. The main reason then was the possible occurrence of depression and suicidal tendencies as a side effect of its use. As has occurred with sibutramine - which also was used in combination with rimonabant - a drug gained prominence for their properties "miracle" in combating obesity. Personal accounts of loss of 10 kg were common with users of this product. Although medical experts would encourage the use should be accompanied by restrictive diets and practice of physical exercises. In the search for quick weight loss effects, many people saw the real hope rimonabant, so the ban seen with bad eyes for a large number of people around the world. But rimonabant actually ended all beneficial properties that spoke to him? How this drug actually works? What is the real reason for its ban? Biological mechanism of action of rimonabant The discovery of this drug came when researchers studied the functioning of the Endo-Cannabinoid System. The interest in this biological mechanism is being given to studies with substance tetrahydrocannabinol (THC) - that even the popular canabbis Sattiva or simply marijuana. The effects of the blade, ie, significantly influence the centers modulators of appetite. Armed with this information, scientists have identified in our body like substances, however, resulting from endogenous production. They also noted the occurrence of specific enzymes in the activation and degradation. Endocanabóides these two were identified as most important: araquidonoilethanolamina, which was named anandamide, and araquidonoilglicerol 2-(2-AG). There are basically two types of receptors for these substances, called receptor CB1 and CB2. Most of these is affected areas in the brain and as the motor function, memory, and mental state. On a smaller scale, CB1 and CB2 appear in cells of the immune system, mucular in adipose tissue and in several other neurological tissue cells. Play an important role in regulating pain, the prevention of some types of cancer and various disorders. Rimonabant acts by tuning with the CB1 receptor, thereby preventing that the anadamida exert its function. One of the most important influences is the activation of the hormone adiponectin secreted by adipocytes and which regulates the formation of fat in our body. Low levels of adiponectin are strong indicators of metabolic syndrome. In this regard, the drug plays a fundamental role in energy use of body fat, improving glucose metabolism and lipid profile. Prohibition of rimonabant Although its effectiveness in burning fat has been proven by several studies, rimonabant has been banned due to the relationship with depression and inclination to suicide. His marketing was suspended in 2008 and continues today. However, it is still possible, with relative ease, find web ads for sale of rimonabant. This situation is similar to what occurs in relation to dianabol, deposteron, winstrol-V and many other anabolic steroids that were removed from circulation and can still be found illegally in generic versions, many of them totally innocuous. Many researchers are working to find a safe substitute for rimonabant. Recently, tests were made with an herb that supposedly would have effects similar to rimonabant: a Ecalyculatta Vel, whose extract is from a plant found in Brazil. According to the company that distributes herbal, herb helps control the nerve centers of appetite - in spite of what makes Acomplia - but without inducing depression. For now, there are no conclusive studies regarding this statement. Conclusions Despite the failed attempt of the creators of rimonabant to produce a definitive solution to combating obesity, many studies are still needed to demonstrate the viability of this product as a safe ally in the burning of body fat. For now, it is best to rely on good old-fashioned combination of exercise and diet!
